Site Stuff: Tips for Using The New Comments System

SignUp

It ‘s been about a week since we switched to a new comments system called Intense Debate.  There are still some issues with the transition and so forth, but I ‘ve caught on to a couple of things (that I should ‘ve noticed earlier) that help make using the system easier.

The first one is that in order to have your comments pass through automatically (without awaiting moderation) you need to be signed up with Intense Debate (takes less than a minute “ enter a name and an email address and verify that address and you ‘re done) and to have one approved comment under that name (after signing up).  Just use the Sing Up link shown in the screencap above, then have one comment approved manually (via moderation from yours truly) and all your subsequent comments should sail through.

The second useful thing I ‘ve picked up on is how to properly subscribe to receive email notifications when there are new comments on a post you have commented on (or one you just want to follow comments on).

SubscribeTo

By default, the ‘Subscribe to ‘ button is set to ‘Replies ‘ when you ‘ve commented on a post.  I thought that looked like the setting I wanted in order to get emails when new comments were added.  It ‘s not though “ this will only email you when someone hits the ‘Reply ‘ button beneath a comment of yours, it will not send an email for any new comment posted.  In order to be informed of all new comments you need to use the drop-down and change it to ‘All new comments ‘.

I should have realized both these helpful things sooner “ my only excuse is I ‘ve also been busy with tweaks to the new site design and other issues.

Anyway, I hope these small tips will help some of you get the best use out of the new comments system.  Feel free to comment on what you think of the new system so far “ I ‘d love to hear your thoughts. 🙂
