Oh! – You Can Buy The New iPhone 3G S Online Or Reserve It at an Apple Store

Wow “ maybe those new iPhone lines won ‘t be so fearsome this year. Just got an email from Apple letting me know I can reserve an iPhone 3G S at an Apple retail store and pick it up June 19th “ or I can order online and have it delivered by June 19th with free shipping.
Hurrah for both of those options! I ‘m going to be trying one or both out very shortly. The web page for these offers does not seem to be fully working just yet, or at least it ‘s not for me. You can find it HERE and see how it goes for you

Anyone notice the fine print!
*Requires new two-year AT&T wireless service contract, sold separately to qualified customers; credit check required; must be 18 or older. For non-qualified customers, including existing AT&T customers who want to upgrade from another phone or replace an iPhone 3G, the price with a new two-year agreement is $499 (8GB), $599 (16GB), or $699 (32GB). Visit http://www.wireless.att.com for eligibility information. In CA, MA, and RI, sales tax is collected on the unbundled price of iPhone.
AndyM and JoeT – Yikes – so far this is not good news at all. I see the same thing as you Joe – just a real kick in the teeth to existing, loyal, iPhone owning customers …
So, I'm curious how I can use an employee discount (FAN) for my monthly bill if I were to preorder the iPhone 3Gs. I contacted AT&T and they simply told me, "We won't sell the iPhone 3Gs for a few weeks."
Does anyone else know? Thanks!
Tory – sorry – I don't know an answer for you. I do know AT&T seem a little clueless about all of this today, which seems dumb. Have a feeling maybe (slightly) better info will be available from them in a couple days time …
So I have a question… my family has verizon now and want the iphone 3G S, if I add to my friends family plan and get a 2 year contract will I be paying the $199 for the 16GB or $599 for it? They have been ATT customers for a long time
Yup… I'm in the same boat – 03/2010 before I qualify for upgrade pricing. I had card in hand basically ready to buy until I saw the prices for EXISTING customers. They can kiss my ass. I won't be buying it from AT&T / Apple. If anything I'll get one from eBay or Craigslist and not extend my contract. Way to screw people over AT&T.
TAYLOR – sorry – I really don't know the answer to your question. Think you'll have to talk to AT&T on that one, and hope that you come across a person there who is clued up enough to give a correct answer. I would be tempted to talk to a few different AT&T people (via a local store, an 800 number etc) and make sure you find a proper and consistent set of answers from them.
Brandon – I hear you – AT&T couldn't really write a better script for pissing off current iPhone owners much more
…Just checked my account @ AT&T:
"iPhone Upgrade
As a valued AT&T customer, we can offer you a discounted iPhone upgrade at a higher price, along with a 2-year commitment and an $18 upgrade fee. Please proceed with the online upgrade process for pricing details. You may qualify for a full discount on a standard iPhone upgrade on 03/13/2010"
Wow. Way to alienate and risk losing your existing customer base.
Yo geniuses complaining about the pricing for existing customers with 3G….NEWSFLASH!!!!!….Your 3G was subsidized by AT&T hence the 2 year contract. The terms for upgrade were clearly spelled out in the contract when you signed. I can understand how you would like AT&T to provide you subsidies all the time no matter how ofter you decide to change phones, but unfortunately if they did that, they would be recieving a government bailout at this point and you'd still be paying the extra $200 anyway in higher income taxes.
Guess what? If you don't like the phone on the pricing, don't buy it. However, I will be buying the 32GB 3GS on the afternoon of June 19th, and banging your girlfriend that evening….thanks to the coolest phone on the market!!!!!
I was qualified for to upgrade because I have the 1st Gen iPhone and had paid for it full retail price, I had to upgrade my phone was acting up on me so I went ahead and pre ordered yet last night =] can't wait, still wait for the apple purchase email.
Where did the 499 599 and 699 come from when I went to pre-order mine on AT&T each one is 200 dollars cheaper than those prices if you aren't eligible for an upgrade. Taylor if you add a new line to any account you get it at the cheaper price since it's a new contract and not renewing one
Jordan – lots of sites (TUAW, iPhone Alley etc) have posted on the 'unsubsidized' rate and listed the prices as $599 for 16GB and $699 for the 32GB …
fuck u all jailbreak ur damn 3g's and u will have all of the same features as the 3g s, if not better; including apps which stream tv shows.
