Tethering Not Available In US, MMS Not Available Until Summer – Is AT&T Trying To Sell The Palm Pre?

Today at the World Wide Developer’s Conference, Apple made note that MMS would be included in the new 3.0 software update – but that it would not be available on AT&T until “this summer”.    That’s painful, but then I just noticed this on Apple’s web site:

“Tethering is not currently offered in the U.S. and some other countries. See your carrier for availability.”

UPDATE: According to Engadet, AT&T says that they will indeed offer tethering, but they have no announcement to make at this time.

If this is not a temporary condition, it’s very hard to imagine how AT&T could make mistakes this serious.   With the Palm Pre a now serious contender for AT&T’s revenue (and Apple’s as well), it is almost unthinkable that AT&T would let this come to pass – but they have.   Hopefully Apple’s slight digs at its premier carrier partner will cause them to wake up before too many people hop on the Pre bandwagon.

I for one would be glad to add a comment about my disappointment with AT&T and protest if someone could give us a web address. S Weiner

AT&T has either: not figured out how much to charge for the tethering service, or –more likely–they are admitting that their network cannot handle the extra load that laptops everywhere would put on their network.

The "inadequate capacity" theory doesn't make a lot of sense given that they sell laptop connect cards. They would gladly sell one to each iPhone user, no?
