WWDC 2009 Rumor Roundup

So what rumors held true and which were fantasy? Let’s take a look.

Rumor: Next iPhone will come in 4,8,16 and 32GB flavors.

Result: Yeah, kinda. No 4GB iPhone, but 16 and 32GB models were released. If you really want to stretch the truth, you could argue the 8GB model part of the rumor held up, because Apple is still selling the iPhone 3G in an 8GB model for $99.

Rumor: New iPhones will have a matte finish.

Result: No. The iPhone 3GS has the same enclosure as the iPhone 3G.

Rumor: New software features such as Compass and Auto focus.

Result: Yes, both the compass and the auto focus camera mentioned in the rumor are true. These new features will be available on the iPhone 3GS.

Rumor: Next iPhone will have video recording capabilities.

Result: Yes, video recording has been added as a feature and appears to be the center of marketing effort for the new iPhone 3GS.

Rumor: Apple to allow background processes?

Result: Not this time around.

Rumor: Voice Dialing

Result: Got it right here.

Rumor: Apple will announce several new iPhone models.

Result: No. But once again you could stretch this one to include the 8GB iPhone 3G Apple is still selling along side the new iPhone 3GS.

Rumor: Apple tablet thingy

Result: Not a single word. Yet.

Rumor: Apple will unveil “Marble” the new Mac OS X User Interface.

Result: Didn’t happen, but I agree with John Gruber and will say that this is an ongoing project somewhere at Apple. We’ll just have to wait for 10.7 to see it.

Rumor: Quicktime getting a different UI.

This is a mock-up. The real thing doens't look much differnent.

This is a mock-up. The real thing doens

Result: Yes, and it looks sexy.

Of course there are many, many more rumors I didn’t mention here, but I will have to say, the rumor mill, although not perfect, does make it easier to piece together what Apple is doing, than say, 5 years ago. We’re getting better.
