iPhone OS 3.0 GM – Early Impressions

I updated to the iPhone OS 3.0 GM (Gold Master) build last night.  This one is supposed to be pretty much the final version, very close to or identical to what will be released on June 17th.

Haven ‘t had a huge amount of time with it yet, but so far there ‘s really not much to report in terms of differences from Beta 5 “ there are a couple things though

One new item that can now be seen, and that we knew was coming, is a ‘Redeem ‘ action under a new ‘More ‘ tab in the App Store app.  You can now use redeem codes for apps on the iPhone itself.  When I first tried this out last night, it gave an error on trying to download the app, and suggested getting it when syncing with my PC “ but when I retried this morning, it downloaded and installed just fine.

Overall the phone feels just a little zippier with this build, but that ‘s just a feeling and after only a little time with the new build, so could easily be wrong.

Memory leak issues do not appear to be resolved as yet.  The iPhone seems like maybe it is coping with low memory a tad better, but the available memory is still running down too quickly.

That ‘s about all I ‘ve noticed thus far.  How about you guys?  Anyone spotted other new / different elements in the GM version so far?

  1. You can redeem app promo codes in 2.x — you just do it in the iTunes app, not the App Store App.

Not sure if this was a GM thing, or just missed it in the last beta, but you can login to YouTube now in the YouTube app. The first time you do it, it offers to sync your favorites, and you can view your full favorites list as well. This is nice for me, as I have TONS of favorites.

The “Find my iPhone” toggle is still there, and still does nothing.

My guess on the new snappiness is that since this is a GM build and not a “beta” build the debug symbols aren’t included. I’d have to artificially cause a dump to be able to tell for sure, but that would be my guess.

The new voice command feature explains why force-quit stopped working. I wonder if they are going to add another way to force-quit apps, but can’t think of an obvious way to do it.

Camera starts up A TON faster in this build I’ve noticed, but it doesn’t seem any different once it starts.

The keyboard would disappear randomly in the last couple beta builds. I haven’t had it happen yet on the GM build, so hopefully that bug is squashed.

When I logged in to iTunes Connect this morning, I was presented with a new payment agreement. I assume it is to handle the new in-app purchase feature and monthly payment cycle. I see the little deposits coming in from Apple, but there’s no way to reconcile what was paid in iTunes Connect yet. Hopefully they will roll out a new report that makes that easier. It’s too bad they don’t offer a hardware discount for the iPhone Developers like they do on the OSX side.

I put in my pre-order for a 32MB 3GS today as well. I couldn’t do it through the apple store, but was able to do it through att.com/iphone It may have something to do with the fact that I also have ATT U-Verse unified billing and the Apple Store can’t handle it. Have you heard any similar reports?

no difference except the fact when installing apps the icon doesn't go away anymore

Joe – like having it in App Store I think.
darklinkhx – yes, I'm seeing that too with the icons.
djfelix – I think the YouTube login was in earlier betas – not positive though, others may confirm. There is a new way to force quit (although I always forget about it) – hold the Power button down until 'Slide to power off' appears, don't slide at that point, instead just hold the Home button down then and the app should quit. On the purchase question, have not heard any other reports of success or failure really – will be trying it out myself tonight. Congrats on the order :)

Got pretty much the same impressions here. A little faster but not huge differences. The 3g loss bug has diminished but not disappeared (perhaps thats a problem with non-oficial carriers – i have a factory unlocked Iphone3G). The form filling bug in Safari has also been fixed. The appstore account management is working great and you can even change the country for an account now (though you'll need to retype your payment options). Icon bug seems gone. Other than that not much has changed from beta 5…

When I listen to a podcast, but sync before finishing the show, the podcast resets to unplayed, forcing me to try to figure out where I got to in the episode. Anyone else have this problem with os 3.0? This didn't happen with 2.2.1 and is a pain in the …

Henry – ouch, that's an ugly one. I haven't seen that, but also haven't listened to a podcast in quite a while.
