Home Run Derby – On The iPhone

I ‘m a sports nut “ watching sports, playing them, playing sports games on the iPhone “ all things I ‘m very fond of doing.  The Home Run Derby during Major League Baseball ‘s annual All Star Game events, is one of my favorite things to watch “ just for the pure spectacle of it.  Last year was a great example of why this event is gripping “ with the Rangers ‘ Josh Hamilton putting on an awesome display of raw power hitting at (the old) Yankee Stadium.

Now there ‘s a new iPhone game, just released this week, that lets you have a crack at participating in a home run derby.  It ‘s called Baseball Slugger: Homerun Race 3D “ and I just started playing a bit with it last night.

I ‘ve only just got started with Baseball Slugger “ so my true prowess as a power hitter is not yet on display 🙂 “ but I am enjoying it so far.  The graphics are very good and provide a sort of ‘pumped up ‘ atmosphere for the game.

You can play in various modes “ ranging from Training (which helps a lot in getting used to handling different pitches) to Classic (see how many home runs you can hit before making 10 outs), and even a Matchup mode where you can compete against others online.  I ‘m still a rookie, so I ‘ve stuck to Training and Classic modes most of the time.

I ‘m still very much getting the hang of the game, but the idea is to tilt the iPhone to control the swing of the bat and tap anywhere on the screen to take your swing.  So far, I ‘m really not feeling the tilting / accelerometer part much and rarely use it “ I just try to time the swing right.  I need a lot of BP. 🙂

The game ‘s sound effects are great “ with a nice crack of the bat type effect when you connect just right, and the roar of the crowd increasing as you hit a few balls out.

Here ‘s a listing of the game ‘s key features, from its App Store page:

I ‘ve always loved the idea of being in a home run derby, from way back in wiffle ball days “ and now Baseball Slugger is getting me about as close as I ‘ll ever get.  A little more practice and I ‘ll be ready for some online matchups “ looking forward to that.

You can find Baseball Slugger in the App Store now, priced at $2.99.
