iPhone OS 3.0 Problem – Wrong App Icons

Posted on 27 Jun 2009 by PatrickJ

wrong icons in iPhone OS 3.0

TUAW has a post up detailing a nasty iPhone OS 3.0 bug, where many apps show wrong icons.  The issue has been reported in the Apple discussion forums as well “ and is said to affect only users of OS 3.0, and has even been seen on new iPhone 3GS models.

Touch wood, I have not seen this issue as yet “ and I would love not to see it at all.

Have any of you been affected by this one?

Yes, I've had it a couple of times. Cydia had the Space Ace icon for awhile. I fixed it by using a theme that changed that icon, and then removing the theme. After it finished removing the theme, the icon was back to normal.

Currently, my "Rock My Phone" icon (or something like that), which is a necessary evil of getting the Intelliscreen program, ironically, has the Intelliscreen icon, instead of its usual one. Since the theme doesn't have icons for that program, I'd have to uninstall and reinstall the program to fix it. I don't care enough about that program to bother though.

I figured it was a jailbreak issue. Guess not.

I'm having the problem as well on my 3GS, also some icons also appears with only half of the icon and the other half grey
how weird is that, I even uninstall and then reinstall and it still appears the same way.

  3. Brent says:

I have but my broken icons are at least dimmed out

  4. JB1 says:

Same problem here. Apple should have known about the issue. There's a report from a beta user dated 6/6.

  5. patrickj says:

This really sounds an ugly problem, or set of similar problems. I'm sure Apple is aware by now, and hopefully bringing us a 3.x update soon. Icons seem to have caused them an awful lot of trouble lately, as before this there was also the 'invisible icons' issue.

  6. Johnny says:

Same to me too… I exchanged to the 3 phone… Same issue… Everytime I restarting the phone some icon got effected

  7. Jeff says:

I have all the same problems listed above with my 3GS, along with some icons that have reverted back to previous versions of the icon. I hope Apple has a fix soon because this is annoying!

  8. robi says:

GRRRRR—my icons are screwed up, but at least the apps are still continuing to work. If apps weren't working, that would definitely irk me!!!

  9. Nibrocla says:

Yeah, my Duke Mobile and Monster Pinball icons are completely gray – uninstalling and reinstalling did no good. 3GS, 3.0

  10. patrickj says:

robi, Nibrocia, all – I still haven't had this issue on my iPhone – but I really hope it gets fixed with the 3.1 update.

  11. Wiz says:

3GS here…3 apps with mixed up icons…app still works but how confusing can you get?

  12. joshgard says:

I just saw this on my iPhone the other day, just a few icons were mixed up (ie. safari had the mail icon and mail had the safari icon). I just thought it was a memory glitch, and rebooted my iPhone. Everything went back to normal and haven't seen it since. Let's hope I don't! :)

  13. patrickj says:

Think lots of us are hoping for that :)

  14. bigbit says:

I had the same problem with Winscp i replaced the icon.pgn with one i found on the net and all went back to normal, so for me the problem is solved. I had to adjust the rightd tho….

  15. throwt says:

I rebooted and 2 apps I recently installed acquired icons of previously uninstalled apps, and one of a currently installed app. I wonder if apple is trying to play this bug as a card to get people to unjailbreak. BTW, No wood touching please.

    • patrickj says:

LOL – no wood touching = good call. My bad. :)

    • throwt says:

I uninstalled those 3 apps, rebooted, and on reinstall they appeared ok, but after rebooting again they appeared with strange icons. I uninstalled them, rebooted, installed 1, rebooted, and so on and after multiple reboots they still seem ok. This worked for me, YMMV…

  16. Joshua says:

same issue here….. shows another apps installing (dim) icon….. really annoying….

  17. wase4711 says:

i am not JB'd, and am having the same problem..has anyone contacted apple for a fix?

    • patrickj says:

I'm pretty sure Apple's well aware of this issue – as it's been all over iPhone forums and iPhone sites / blogs as well. Hopefully 3.1 will squash it.

  18. Farès says:

I encountered this issue once. What I did was the following: I deleted the faulty apps from the iPhone and then re-synced it with iTunes and all was back to normal….

  19. Tbone says:

Does anyone know when 3.1 comes out? My sound keeps cutting out on my new 3gs so I have to reset the phone. After I reset it my app icons get all mixed up on all of my apps. I have done this process at least 5 times. I can't find a permanent fix. It will be fine for a few days and then same sequence again.

    • patrickj says:

I saw something the other day (cannot recall where) that mentioned September. That seems an awfully long time to wait for it, given that they've had betas of it out for quite some time now.

  20. flyer says:

I downloaded the iPhone software update 3.0.1 and everything returned to normal.

  21. Mr M.I.A. says:

I have seen this many times. It happens after a sync sometimes. You can usually tell by the icon being dimmed as mentioned before. Also most of the time deleting the app and tedownloading it will fix that icon but sometimes it does not fix the issue.

  22. bill says:

I have problem on my iphone 3gs32. only had it about a week. has 2.5 pages of apps and 2 apps have the wrong icon. they appear dimmed though.

I also have an intermittent problem where i wake the phone up and the touch pad is not responsive at all. i have to press the power button to sleep it and then wake it up again and it is fine. it's a quick workaround but still somewhat annoying on a brand new phone.

    • patrickj says:

On that second issue, I would think maybe a visit to the Apple store would be a good idea, if you have one nearby. That should not be occurring.

On that second issue, I would think maybe a visit to the Apple store would be a good idea, if you have one nearby. That should not be occurring, and strikes me as a likely hardware issue.

  23. I have experienced this issue with a couple of apps on my non-jailbroken 3G S. I consider it no more than an annoyance; hopefully it will be fixed in an upcoming software update.
