App Store Updates Weirdness Back?

App Store updates weirdness

A few months back “ on iPhone OS firmware 2.2.x “ there were some severe issues with the App Store and showing correct information for app updates.  One minute you ‘d be shown that zero updates were available, then moments later you ‘d see 10 available updates, and many long-ago applied updates would show up as being new / needed.  In short, you were consistently seeing unreliable and inaccurate information on the Updates tab.

iPhone OS 3.0 fixed this issue.  But I ‘m seeing it rear its ugly, annoying head again in the last few days.

Today for instance, within the space of one minute, the Updates tab told me I had:

No updates available “ as shown in the screencap top of this post

4 updates available

App Store updates

5 updates available

5Updates

And then it showed 4 updates again.  Each time I pressed the Updates button (which refreshes the count) I got a different answer “ just like in the bad old days of March.

Normally, I would see whether a restart would correct the issue “ but at the moment I ‘m keen on testing out how long the new 3GS can continue its Iron Man type performance without requiring a reboot (12 days and counting), and the issue is not yet severe enough to merit breaking up that test.

Anyone else seeing these or similar issues with the Updates tab?  Have you restarted?  If so, did it fix it and / or keep it fixed?  I wonder whether there ‘s a fix for this waiting in 3.1.

i also had those update issues in the spring. now i'm also having some app update weirdness, but mine is a bit different. my 3gs tells me i should update sportacular, facebook, and epicurious — but when i try to install the updates, i get a "cannot connect to itunes store" error. i've had this issue for about a week. as those three apps sit on the update page in the app store, i've since received and installed other valid updates. i just can't seem to get rid of the those three bum updates. ideas?

plugging into your mac and sycing with iTunes usually gets the device back on track. I've had your experiences and susannah's, and doing it off the desktop (check for updates, download all to the Mac, then sync the phone) fixes the issues and gets everyone back on track…

Good call – I haven't actually synced in a while. Will give it a go – although I do recall that when this issue was at its height in March, no amount of syncing, uninstalling, re-installing, device restarting etc. was fixing it.

Not only THAT but I am also getting gray icons that say "waiting.." and render my apps useless. I have 7 of them, after my 3rd restart it actually fixed all my OTHER swapped icon and effed up app icons and then placed the gray ones at the end. I also can't download anymore apps because it is waiting on the others to download….

I've been noticing a bunch of apps getting re-queued up for download when they are not changing version number. What I have noticed is that this appears to happen when they add the "iPhone OS 3.0 Tested" label to the app. (You'll notice that all the apps listed on your screenshot now have those words after the version number.) I believe that as official test results come in, Apple is tagging those applications and triggering the update. I haven't seen repeated re-downloads of apps lately once they have been tagged as tested with OS 3.0.

Hmmm – not sure I follow all the way. I'm definitely not seeing any app updates show up again after they've been applied (which I did see back in March when this issue was far more severe).

I had issues before like you. AND now too. Actually just noticed it today :( Before I tried everything and then all of a sudden after about 3 weeks it stopped? I figured it was on Apple's server side.
