Apple Stores Will Now Replace Broken iPhone Screens, While You Wait

This week, Apple announced that a specific repair, screen replacement, can be performed at Apple Store Genius Bars while the customer waits. The service is free if your phone is under warranty, otherwise it will cost you $199. Yikes. Of course, "Under Warranty" refers to the date purchased as well as other factors like liquid damage* or jailbreaking.

Very good news if you have the misfortune of ending up with a cracked iPhone screen.  Before now, this would have been a very expensive repair, and one that required sending your phone away to either Apple or a specialist 3rd party repair company.  Being able to replace a screen for free and while you wait at an Apple Store is a huge step up in this area.

Here ‘s hoping none of us need to give the new system a test though. :)

Too late. Been there, done that. LOL. Yup, couple of months ago my 3G's screen shattered, and I didn't bother to get it fix since it was still working, and I had the feeling of the new iPhone coming out.

I was actually at the Apple store about a week ago, and they do in fact do it while you wait. The $199 charge is also accurate. Anyway, couple of steps outside the Apple store is a Kiosk that repair Macs, and iPhone of course. They charge $99 while you wait, hmmm….

Now I have both the 3G, and the 3GS. The 3G is now a "game device" for my kids. The good thing I like about the App store is, I can buy one, and put it on all my iPhones (3 and counting). LOL.
    :P

Ouch – sorry you've had 'the experience'. My V1 is a game device (and an educational one) for my kiddo as well :)

I recently had my phone crack and I took it in to the apple store, eager to hear that they now repalaced the screens. What was failed to be mentioned to me is that they charge $199 to repair the screen. (hmm seems kinda high, knowing that THAT IS WHAT I PAID FOR THE PHONE!) I was very upset until I found http://www.iphone3gscreenrepair.com. They repaired my iPhone 3G screen for only $69.99 and it looked like new. They even offered me a 1 year warranty on the product. I was very impressed!

I thought they were making it pretty clear it was a $199 cost if the phone was out of warranty. In any case, very glad you got a good deal and a good result.

$199- I purchased my iphone for that price! There are outside places that cost a heck of a lot less. When my screen broke, I used a mail in service. This was the original article I found: http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,251950,00.htm…

Yup, I'm aware there are better deals out there if you mail in, or even get parts and instructions and attempt repairs yourself. This change at Apple stores was still newsworthy though for all those folks who just can't be without their iPhone and are willing to pay a premium to get an immediate fix.
