iPhone 3GS – Notes on How To Restore, Apply SMS Security Update, & Re-jailbreak

Last night I got into ‘have my cake and eat it too ‘ mode “ as in, I decided I needed to apply the 3.0.1 urgent security update for the iPhone, but also wanted to get straight back to being jailbroken.

I managed to get both things done last night, and took some quick notes along the way.  Thought I ‘d share those here, in case any of you are thinking about the same sort of process.

Here ‘s what I did after coming home from having a few beers with some work colleagues I hadn ‘t seen in way too long (all the best decisions get made after a few beers right?):

I already had a recent backup, otherwise I would have done that as Step 1 “ so I skipped straight to this process:

1) Did a DFU mode restore to get the two files that are needed in order to  ‘safeguard your jailbreak’ once OS 3.1 comes out (IBEC and iBSS) – per these instructions at the iClarified site, which are recommended by the Dev Team, for Mac and 3GS: http://www.iclarified.com/entry/index.php?enid=4400

** If you need a reminder on how to get into DFU mode, iClarified also has you covered here: http://www.iclarified.com/entry/index.php?enid=1034

2) Setup as New phone, not from backup (as is nearly always the best move in these processes in my experience).

3) Ran the update to the new 3.0.1 firmware (with the critical SMS security fix) via iTunes.

4) Downloaded redsn0w 0.8 3GS for Mac – at iPhone Download Blog’s download page: http://www.iphonedownloadblog.com/iphone-downloads/

5) Did the re-jailbreak with redsn0w – using our friend Sebastien ‘s intructions at his iPhone Download Blog site: http://www.iphonedownloadblog.com/2009/07/31/jailbreak-iphone-3-0-1-redsn0w/

*** One important thing to note is that although you will be choosing the 3.0 firmware file during the redsn0w jailbreak, if you have completed the other steps as above, you will remain on 3.0.1.

*** I had previously been jailbroken with purplera1n, but it is not yet working with the 3.0.1 update from everything I ‘ve read so far “ and I ‘ve always had very good results in the past with Dev Team jailbreak tools.

Results & a Few More Quick Notes:

The jailbreak was quick and successful. The firmware is 3.0.1 and Cydia is installed and working.

Ran a sync to get apps / photos etc. back.

Setup main settings, email accounts and main preferences again.

Re-arranged home screens / app icons “ always the most annoying portion of things!

Started on re-installing some Cydia apps – after the install of Mobilesubstrate and hitting Reload Springboard on its Complete screen, the iPhone froze up and needed a hard reboot.  All is fine following that hard reboot.

Phone, YouTube, and everything else I ‘ve tested so far is working fine.

Battery life seems about the same so far “ and performance is still great.

Have got most of my (small handful of) Cydia apps re-installed and working fine.

Overall, I ‘m very pleased with my results.  I ‘ve got the security patch and I ‘ve got my jailbreak back.  The whole process took around 3 hours, including syncing everything back, re-doing prefs and settings, and messing with home screens arrangement.  So, while far from super-quick, it was pretty manageable, and well worthwhile as I ‘m enjoying being jailbroken.

Glad I was able to help :)

  2. Ugghhhh…yeah i need to do the same thing. I'm just not looking forward to redownloading everything from cydia again and setting up custom theme and all that jazz. But i guess i have no choice. I'll definitely be taking advantage of the "cueue"ing option this time around in cydia. I always forget about it. Well, i'm off work for the next 6 days, so i'm sure i'll get bored at some point, and this will be something ill do to fill 3-4 hours of that time. Thanks for the breakdown of the steps. I'm sure that will help some of the less experienced make the process less painful.

You may already know this, but just in case – there are a couple of backup apps that claim they'll backup your Cydia apps (and then allow you to restore them after you re-jailbreak). AptBackup and PkgBackup. I have not tried either one yet because A) I just don't have very many Cydia apps installed yet and don't need this and B) I am a little concerned that if I use these and later return to 'stock' they will leave residual traces in the OS that I prefer not to have – that is just a suspicion of mine because of the nature of the apps, not something I have researched or verified etc.

      • I was thinking the exact same thing about those programs myself. I would hate to use something like that, later have a problem with my phone, restore, and then take it apple for a repair and get blacklisted!! Lol! I would not be happy. And I really don't have enough experience to know where that info would be kept to get rid of it. Just the nature of the program itself means it is storing something on the phone that is preserved even after a restore right? I might do some research and decide before I update my phone. I have a lot of cydia apps and that's always the most painful and time consuming part of the deal. We'll see. If I try one I'll def let u know how it goes! Thanx

I'm not sure on this (the storing something that persists after a jailbreak) – it's just a suspicion on my part, that I need to research further at some point. For now, I shied away though. Yes, definitely let us know if you find time-saving solutions for those reinstalls. That's always a no fun portion of the restore process.

Hey Patrick, what's your favorite jailbreak apps or what do you have installed on your phone? Here's my list of top Jailbreak apps that I use:

    1. SBsettings
    2. Backgrounder
    3. OpenSSH
    4. Qik (which reminds me I need to download)….it seems the guys at Qik is consistently making updates to their Cydia version of Qik as the official appstore version is not approved yet by Apple.
    5. Bosspaper (I had it before upgrading to 3.01….now I need to download it again)

But ya, I can't wait till 3.1 comes out with the Augmented Apps.

Btw, I'm hoping to be one of the few lucky ones to win an agile messenger.

I haven't been JBed long enough this time round to have very many faves yet. So far, mQuickDo is far and away my favorite, as app switching is probably the single biggest reason for staying jailbroken right now. SBSettings has always been a favorite, and still is. I like Backgrounder, though not sure how often I'll make use of it – will see. Qik has always sounded great, but I really don't do enough with video to find it very useful.

What is Bosspaper? Couldn't find it in Cydia just now – maybe I need to add a source?

  4. Patrick, here is the link to the bigboss site where he describes and tells you how to install bosspaper.

I've seen videos of this app and it looks pretty cool. Will install it right now

Thank you. I'm a little gun-shy on Winterboard themes that want to do too much or that may burn too much battery life. I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on this one.
