I spotted some more good news today for fans of the NetNewsWire app, whether on the desktop, the iPhone, or both.  Firstly, for desktop (Mac) users there is shiny new beta out that adds one big and very shiny new feature “ sync with Google Reader.

I ‘ve been trying out the 3.2 (public beta) version, and the sync with Google Reader, for a little while today.  I ‘ve always liked NetNewsWire each time I ‘ve given it a look, but sync with Reader is a must for me, so I never give it very heavy use.

So seeing this sync added is a big deal for me.  It will take a lot to move me away from Reader, largely because I ‘m just so used to working with it, and also because it nicely hooks into so many other services “ but lately it has been a little flaky and NetNewsWire is an app that I ‘ve considered a good possible alternative if it did get any integration with Reader.

Welcome to NetNewsWire

For now, sync works for marking items as read and unread, and for starring items (called flagging in NNW) “ which for me are the most essential sync elements.  Liking and sharing items are not yet possible.

The other bit of good news I discovered today via a post at the nnwbeta.com site is this:

We ‘re working as quickly as we can on NetNewsWire 2.0 for iPhone. It also will sync with Google Reader.

That is excellent news.  Again, it will take a lot to sway me from Reader “ but NetNewsWire with an offline capability, a compelling desktop app, a good iPhone app, and full sync with Reader would be a serious contender.

I can ‘t wait to see NetNewsWire 2.0 for iPhone.

  1. I'm using the byline app right now…which is pretty decent i guess. Any word on a release date for this?

If you're not a big user of groups in Twitter and don't mind paying for a desktop app, you might like Eventbox (Mac only). http://thecosmicmachine.com/ It currently syncs with Google Reader, Twitter, Facebook, Flickr, Digg, plus a few other services, and the developer plans to add more. Technically there is a way to set up groups in Eventbox, but it's extremely cumbersome. I believe the developer is working on making that easier. The two reasons I'm not using it are that I do use groups in Twitter and prefer multi-column support. It is slick, though, and the number of services it supports is appealing.

  3. Still no update to the NNW iPhone app, so I switched to Byline. It's so-so… kinda slow. It's a shame NewsGator couldn't hold it together. NNW was a great desktop/iphone combo.

iPhone version adds tons of ads – every feed starts with RELLY BIG ad. From the best RSS client suddenly it has become completely useless app. Avoid it and use some other client.
