Updated iPhone Apps: Urbanspoon
Urbanspoon “ the iPhone app that helps you choose a restaurant in your area “ has been a staple on my iPhones for ages. It ‘s just had an update that adds a few clever new features, including:
- Restaurant hours
- Skip the GPS wait and use last location
- Filter by distance, popularity, no chains, and the meal you ‘re looking for
Small but nice changes I ‘d say. I especially like the ability to filter out chains.
This latest version is in the App Store now, and it remains a free app.

US-centric, right?
Afraid so – its App Store description says 'available in most North American cities as well as London, Sydney, and Melbourne'.
I love Urbanspoon. I travel a fair bit & finding a restaurant is not hard; finding a good one harder; and finding a good one near where I am or where I am going is much harder.
Urbanspoon helps on both counts–good and nearby. My GPS, googlemaps, and AroundMe round out the quartet of finding good food on the road. When traveling I hate to eat at the same place twice. Urbanspoon caters to this impulse in me with its slot-machinelike interface.
