Where Are All The Jailbreak Apps?

Changes1 Changes2

Here ‘s something I ‘ve been noticing more and more on Cydia lately: there ‘s a real scarcity of ‘real apps ‘ whenever I browse through the ‘Changes ‘ section that shows new arrivals in the Cydia store.  The two screencaps above show some of yesterday ‘s new items -almost entirely themes, ringtones, and apps related to those.  In other words, nothing substantial.

I check this area of the store just about every day, and that ‘s a pretty typical result. Very little to look at in terms of interesting new apps.

Like most people, I expected there to be a big drop-off in jailbreak apps development once the App Store got going, but since coming back to being jailbroken with the 3GS, I ‘m finding the number of new apps around to be even lower than I expected.

Admittedly, I have not added any sources to the default list that comes in Cydia “ but by now, that covers most of the leading repositories I think.

As I ‘ve mentioned in previous posts on the jailbreak experience, I have found a handful of jailbreak apps that are worth their weight in gold for me.  But so far they are few and far between.

I also follow what ‘s new in the App Store pretty closely.  It offers up a whole lot of junk each day, of course, but I do also find several apps each week (at least) that interest me enough to give them a try.  Thus far, I can ‘t say the same for Cydia.

How about you all?  Have you got lots of additional sources installed?  Do you find there are more new apps that interest you than I ‘m seeing?

  1. Patrick. i have observed similar stuff
i wonder whether this is because more and more developer have their attention captured on creating "legit" iphone apps on the app store simply because for the same effort the reward is potentially bigger

There is another vital reason: if you had several apps like me rejected you still don't dare to put them on Cydia because the SDK agreement forbids use of "alternative app stores" next to Apple's. You might get your developer program access cancelled and that also means losing the hundreds of dollars that your apps are making on the app store with little effort.

I've also noticed an unfortunate drop-off in good cydia apps. I think another issue to those already mentioned is the number of iPhone/iTouch operating systems. There seem to be a lot of people still running 2.x and a lot of apps haven't been updated to support 3.0.

I'd forgotten about this element of things – that's a big deterrent as well.

You have to remember, it is not nearly as easy to get an app on cydia then it is to get an app on the app store. Also, the amount of developers are very very low. Really, the only "real" apps that you are going to get on cydia, are the ones that are not allowed in the app store. These apps take a while to build…
