Apple ‘It’s Only Rock and Roll’ Event – A Few Quick Thoughts

Today ‘s big Apple event was not at all focused on iPhones, so as expected there was not a whole lot of iPhone-related news.
There was some though, including some very noteworthy items. Like many of you, I ‘m busy restoring my jailbroken iPhone 3GS and updating it to OS 3.1 right now, but while I ‘m awaiting the final update process, I thought I ‘d share a few quick thoughts on the iPhone news we did hear today
Here ya go “ some very quick thoughts on what we heard at today ‘s event:
No More Waiting on 3.1: I ‘m glad there was no waiting around for iTunes 9 and OS 3.1 “ nice to see them available minutes after the event. Being jailbroken, there ‘s usually a bit of dancing around to be done when a new OS update comes out, and sometimes choose temporarily between jailbreak and new firmware / features. I ‘m so keen to see app organizing that I ‘ve chosen new firmware today. I really hope the Dev Team will soon bring us a re-jailbreak method for use with 3.1 (I have my iBEC and iBSS files saved).
FIFTY MILLION iPhone OS Devices Sold: Wowza “ 30 million iPhone sold to date, and 20 million iPod Touches. That ‘s amazing “ go iPhone OS platform go.

Other Gigantic Numbers: There are 75,000 apps in the App Store now, and users have downloaded over 1.8 billion apps.
Genius for Apps: ‘App recommendations based on the apps you own ‘. Sounds good to me. Keen to see how well this works.
Ringtones & Assorted Other Bits: I feel ‘meh ‘ about ringtones at $1.29. Pricy, but maybe worth a dabble once in a while. 8GB Touches for $199 “ still feels a little high to me. Lots of the changes in iTunes look / sound very nice. Overall, the Touch / iPod / Nano changes don ‘t excite me, but they generally don ‘t.
App Organizing: Hurrah, hurrah, and hoo-effin-rah. Can ‘t wait to play with this and see how (hopefully) good it is.
That ‘s it for me “ and my 31 update is done, now need to go sync and play.
How about you all? What did you like / not like at today ‘s event?

Nice article covering the major points. Still no Beatles??? I am thankful for the organization tool in iTunes
How about you Patrick, what is your favorite new feature?
Alright, that's good news. I'll be upgrading my itunes now. But of course, i'm going to wait until the jailbreak is out for 3.1. I just can't live without my jailbreak! But for me, the most exciting feature is being able to use voice control with my jawbone. I hardly ever talk on the phone with the phone to my ear. It will be very convenient to be able to dial without having to grab my phone. Hurry Dev Team!!!
So you think that there is a good chance installing 3.1 wont render it not jailbreakable?
Very chuffed to see app management – just a shame they didn't implement folders/categories for apps too while they were on!
(and dont get me started on IMAP IDLE / Push Gmail!)
Oh, absolutely I do – believe that we'll see a 3.1 jailbreak fairly soon that is. App management is not all that impressive so far I have to say.
Apple still didn't fix the Spotlight search. I can still find old emails I deleted a week ago. Very strange. Apple why did you not implement categories to the app organizer. Happy but they could have put more thought into the organizer. Better than nothing I guess.
Spotlight – haven't tried that yet, but sounds like ouch, not good. Not super impressed with app organizing either.
Yup, people are saying the Spotlight bug was fixed in Beta & Apple let it slip through the cracks on the release. Hopefully they will release a fix for this soon. Yes, App Organizer needed a bit more…. The App Organizer released today should have been the one released last year. Very interesting day!
Has anyone else noticed that after upgrading to 3.1 calendars you subscribe to on the Mac are now synced via MobileMe? I now have two copies on my iPhone for calendars I subscribed to both on the Mac and the iPhone. One in the MobileMe section of the iCal app and one in the subscribed calendars section. I checked to see if my default selection in iTunes for calendar syncing had changed post iTunes 9 to include a wired sync with iCal, but it hadn't. Because if Apple is now allowing you to wirelessly sync subscriptions via MobileMe – Awesome!
