KATU News Delivers iPhone App for the Portland Area

Posted on 24 Sep 2009 by Josh Gard

KATU TV (the local ABC affiliate, owned by Fisher Interactive), located in Portland, Oregon, has announced their recent addition to the iPhone App market. The KATU News iPhone app takes the best features from KATU TV and KATU.com, and rolls them into an intuitive and pleasant mobile experience.

You can get the latest local and national news updates, review the latest weather report, watch video from KATU News, and share stories with your friends and family via Twitter,  Facebook, and in-app e-mail directly from your iPhone.

While this app has an inherent audience limitation, for those living in and around the Portland area, this is a must-have app for keeping up-to-date on what’s happening.

The KATU News app is a free download, and is available on the iPhone App Store here.

Here's an idea. Wouldn't it be nice if you could do geographically centered searches for apps? ie – Search for “All Apps Concerning Pittsburgh, Pa, or Minneapolis, Mn, etc. I only find out about these things through reviews

Oh I completely agree Greg! I would love for an option in the app store to search for geographically-centered apps, for instance the iphone app store could use the GPS location to find any apps that have to do with where you're at. I only found out about the KATU app from watching the news here in Portland. I've seen zero mention of it on any iPhone website, or even on KATU's website (edit: now that I look they have a small ad for the app, though it's not exactly obvious…) for that matter. Who knows how many other excellent location-specific apps are out there that very few people actually know about.

I think that would be cool too. I would say keywords could get you most of the way there, but they get abused so often that I think it would be much better to see Greg's suggestion implemented.
