‘The rate of App Store downloads continues to accelerate with users downloading a staggering two billion apps in just over a year, including more than half a billion apps this quarter alone, ‘ said Steve Jobs, Apple ‘s CEO. ‘The App Store has reinvented what you can do with a mobile handheld device, and our users are clearly loving it. ‘

From an Apple press release today.  I don ‘t see how you could disagree with Jobs ‘ line about reinventing what can be done on a handheld.  Some of the other staggering numbers contained in the release:

  • There are now more than 85,000 apps available
  • Over 125,000 developers in Apple ‘s iPhone Developer Program
  • More than 50 million iPhone and iPod Touch customers worldwide
  • More Than 85,000 Apps Now Available for iPhone & iPod touch

Oh, and the other thing that jumps off the page for me in the quote above is that the current quarter ‘s result puts them at a Two Beellion apps per year pace.  Unreal.

I firmly believe the smartphone arena is all about the platform, and damn the iPhone IS platform is booming. You can see the full Apple press release HERE.

I just dont believe it actually. Have you run the numbers? That's over 4 million downlads everday since they have been open which I find very very doubtful. I think Apple is lying to boost it's stock. I hardley ever even see an iPhone user when I'm out or flying. If there are as many as Apple claims I shgould be seeing them everywhere. Fact is I do see many BB users, far more than I see iPhone users.

Color me gullible, but I tend to think (even with the recent Google Voice nonsense and apparent fibbing by Apple) these ate just lies that would come back to bite them in the arse and would not be worth the risk. Also, with the 70 million devices now running the iPhone OS, and the huge success the App Store has been since Day 1, I don't find it that tough to swallow.

I'm not much of a numbers cruncher though. :)

It does seem a bit high so the numbers may be misleading. But I think it depends on where you are to see iPhone users. I mostly see students and young professionals rather than white collar business types with iPhones. But I live in a predominantly college town (Austin) that's big on all things geeky. When I travel, I see mostly BBs too. Of the iPhone users I've talked with, they usually have about 7-8 pages of apps (unless they are JB and use Categories).

Hi. I'm from Denmark and we have only had the iPhone for a year…. officially… and everywhere I go, there's an iPhone. Well, Denmark isn't the biggest country in the world, but I think it gives a clue to the spread in Europe. Besides, I haven't even seen a BB in Denmark yet :-)

As a new iPhone developer, I love hearing news like this. I'm not sure where some of you spend your time, but half the people I know have iPhones. They are everywhere. The bottom line is that the iPhone is a great product and Apple has done a hell of a job marketing the App Store. Of course, you can download apps for basically every other mobile platform as well, but a lot of people probably don't even know that.
