Dropbox iPhone App Looks Good

Dropbox on iPhone

I can ‘t think of a better way to describe Dropbox than that.  It really is the best and easiest to use sync / backup tool I ‘ve ever seen.  I love using it on the Mac, and now it has come to the iPhone.

The iPhone app follows the simple and elegant theme pretty well, and works like a charm for me so far.  Sync between my Mac and iPhone is virtually instant.

Up to now, I have used Dropbox on the Mac primarily for backup “ so I didn ‘t have an awful lot of files that I would need to view on the iPhone.  Now that I have the iPhone app though, I may well use it as a quick sharing method for photos / docs between the two.  It offers a simpler, quicker way to flash files back and forth from iPhone to Mac (or PC) than any other I have seen.

Here are some of the main features of the new Dropbox app:

  • Access your Dropbox on the go
  • View your files
  • Download files for offline viewing
  • Take photos and videos and sync them to your Dropbox
  • Share links to files in your Dropbox
  • Photo galleries

*** It ‘s important to note that the iPhone app is NOT intended as a stand-alone product.  It works with the main Dropbox service, for which you need a Dropbox account (there are free and paid account types).

Dropbox (on the desktop) is one of those rare apps where once you ‘ve used it for two minutes you cannot help but say ‘Brilliant ‘.  Adding an iPhone app has just added to the brilliance of it.  Lovely to see this one on the iPhone, and it will be a fixture on my iPhone.

You can find the Dropbox app in the App Store now, and it is free.

Thanks to Frank C. for the reminder Monday night that this was out :)

  1. Well it took you long enough….LOL I really like the streaming video which has really no delay. They need to add the pinch & zoom feature to the pictures. Overall a really nice app :) MobileMe & iDisk should take a lesson from DropBox.

That would be fantabulous if MobileMe and iDisk could get as good as Dropbox – would almost feel worth the $99 I dropped again recently to renew it :) Wait, that can't be right – because I'm the guy who cares about $3 – and that means I refuse to pay for my coffee and work for minimum wage and so forth :)

      • That was funny but I totally agree. I just renewed my subscription to MobileMe & sometimes I wonder why…. Apple really does owe us an update for MobileMe when we are paying that kind of money every year. I think Steve Jobs laughs @ us all every year for renewing. LOL

I think it feels a tad pricy, but that is more about me not making good use of all the features. For those who really use most or all of them, it's probably a pretty fair price. I am honestly mostly keeping it for the Find My Phone and testing other bits occasionally or as any iPhone-related things come along.

          • Patrick, the one feature that is missing for MobileMe is PUSH NOTIFICATIONS!!! I still don't understand why Apple has not implemented a Push Notification setup for MobileMe email. I would love to get a push alert showing me a part of the e-mail. To me it's a no brainer…..

I love it, but I wish it would allow you to save photos from the Dropbox iPhone app to your iPhone photo album. Hopefully, that will come in an update…

I'm dead keen to try this out but will have to wait a bit as I'm on 3.0.1 still and it is only a 3.1 app. The Dropbox team are addressing this though (as mentioned on their forum posting: http://forums.getdropbox.com/topic.php?id=12998) I'll copy/paste it here for ease:

    hi guys,
thank's so much for all the praise and downloads (over 75k installs in the 24 hours after launch! :)

this is just the 1.0 and we realize there are many, many features to add and bugs to fix (zoom in photos, folder favoriting, etc etc :) . we also hear you loud and clear on the 3.0 restriction. we didn't realise it'd create such an uprising!

we opted for 3.1 because API methods related to saving videos was not available on 3.0. this meant that videos taken within the app would be permanently lost in the event of a flaky/slow internet connection. this happened to us enough in testing that we felt it wasn't a risk we wanted to expose to our users.

that said, it looks like there's a workaround that'll allow us to protect against this for 3.1 users while still allowing 3.0 users to use the app. we're hoping to get a quick maintenance release out with a few small bug fixes + 3.0 support.

please continue to provide feedback – we're listening!
