Quick iPhone Tip: Don’t hide your YouTube app icon

Posted on 16 Oct 2009 by Thomas

I haven’t had time to test this with many other apps because of work but I know for sure now that hiding the YouTube app icon (via SBSettings) will kill links to it. This means that apps like Tweetie and Safari will no longer be able to call upon YT for sweet, mobilicious video. I thought I could get away with doing this during my Battle of the Home Screen silliness, but it turns out that part of the plan backfired. I don’t really launch the YouTube app very often, but I’ll have to keep it around now if I want to enjoy any linked clips…unless I can find a way to get the MxTube jailbreak app to be be default player. Gosh, this jailbreak stuff is complicated!

  1. Good notice! Never hid that icon but that's good to know. You wouldn't think that would happen since hiding the icon doesn't get rid of the app, but iI guess the way the iPhone is coded it must look to the springboard to launch that extension. Interesting…

  2. This is true of the app store too. When I had my phone jailbroken I used the dock in sbsettings to hide all of my "settings" type apps. When I tried to place the app store under sbsettings, in app links and web links to the app store would error out.
