160 iPhone Apps and Just One Home Screen = Sweeeeet

PogoPlank for iPhone

It ‘s still only been 24 hours, of using the new PogoPlank springboard replacement, but I have to say I am enjoying the heck out of it.

It just feels so good to suddenly have just * one * home screen, after being used to running between 8-11 for quite a while now. I ‘m continuing to tweak which apps go into which folders (and which new folders I may need) but I am finding it a much nicer way to organize and find things than any home screen arrangement I ‘ve ever devised.

So far I have got 14 folders covering everything from Family to Utilities “ with some of them containing just a handful of apps and others housing up to 15-20 apps.

Another little thing to get used to when using PogoPlank is that when you do a new app install, or an app update, you of course will not see the install progress via a status bar on an app icon “ because there are no icons anywhere anymore.  So you just need to watch the little status wheel within the status bar:

PogoPlank

As well as loving the idea of just one home screen, it ‘s also a real pleasure being able to enjoy wallpapers like never before on the iPhone.  Not only is your own wallpaper visible, it is splashed across the full screen with only PogoPlank ‘s minimalistic wheel (in at least some of its custom themes) infringing on it at all.  So walls like the one featuring an Apple logo at the top of this post stand out much more than they ever did behind rows of icons.  As does this one as well

PogoPlank

I don ‘t feel like I ‘ve got it all figured out yet in terms of how many folders I need and some of the fine-tuning of them, but I feel very comfortable with PogoPlank so far.

There was an update today for the app, but I could not see any details of what was fixed / added.  I did see some very good news on what is coming in future updates, via a tweet from the devs earlier:

App re-ordering and Spotlight (as in, getting it back to being accessible while PogoPlank is active) are easily my two biggest wish list items.  So hurrah for that.  Hope that update is not too far off.

  4. Sounds like it's working out nicely for you! That's good news! I will say you jab come a LONG way over the last 6 months! I am so in love with my setup right now that IRS going to be hard for me to change, but it is good to know I have this as a viable alternative. And by the way, thanks for the mention of Kirikae the other day. I didn't know anything about it, but it is by far my fav new feature! I like it more than Mquickdo. Could u imagine it with an update that actaully showed the screencaps of the apps running? That would be like that video floating around of the screen switching concept. I love it! If you've never done a snippet on it(don't remember seeing one but I may have missed it?) one might might be in order.

It's working very nicely for me. As for the long way in 6 months, maybe so – but keep in mind I've been jailbreaking since very early V1 iPhone and 1.x firmware days as well, and using and writing about JB apps since well before the App Store ever came along.

Glad to hear you like Kirikae so much. I am using it, but rely on mQuickDo more. Will work on a little post on it.

  6. I'd really like to install and use this app (looks amazing), but i still don't like that you can only have 5 categories. What if my apps can only be categorized in more than 5 macro groups?
There should be a way to increase categories.
I'm looking forward to it, if it is implemented, i'll install this app.

It would be even better if one is allowed to create sub-categories within each category. I can get around it by using Categories, but I would rather have 1 app that does it all.
Also, it will be even better if when I select the category, instead of a scroll list of apps, I get a page of apps. I do not want to scroll too much. Or how about replacing the wheel with the apps/sub-categories?

I used it for a while, I got annoyed by the updating process so I switched back to springboard until further notice, but, I have two questions:
    1) How did you get it so the inactive category icons are semi-transparent? Was that an update that I missed?
    2) Not a question, but, there is a Glasklart pogoplank theme (a really good one too) since I saw you had the theme active for your dock icons ;)

    • patrickj says:

      1) Think it may be part of the theme, not a setting I can recall adjusting.
      2) Cool – not sure how I missed that one – I try to always keep an eye out for PogoPlank themes. I quite like it, although I also still am very fond of the Leopard theme. Trying out Glasklart one for a bit though – thanks for mentioning it.
