Reel Director = Video Editing App for the iPhone 3GS

Reel Director iPhone app

Want to do more than just the most basic of video editing directly on your iPhone 3GS?  Yup, now there ‘s an app for that “ and it ‘s called Reel Director.

I haven ‘t grabbed the app yet (as I just don ‘t shoot a whole lot of video on the 3GS) but it looks fairly impressive.  Its features include:

  • Add and stitch together clips, drag and drop to re-arrange order
  • Add text watermarks of title, opening credits and closing credits with 4 styles and 9 transitions
  • Put transitions between clips to smooth or blend the change from one screen to another. 27 transitions to choose from.
  • Timeline “ scrollable, seekable within clips
  • Preview “ full preview of frame at current timeline position, with watermarks and transitions applied
  • Texts “ title and multiline opening and closing credits

You can grab Reel Director in the App Store now, priced at $7.99.

I learned of this app via this thread by ZR_Yancy at the everythingiCafe forums.

I am a professional video editor, and picked Reel Director up the moment I saw it. It's not a fully featured editor, but it's majorly impressive for editing on a phone. It's intuitive and its output is clean.

There are some shortcomings, like no way to add an independent audio track — voice-over, music, or audio from another clip, no way to adjust the length of a title, no way to rotate video clips that happen to have been shot in a different orientation. But, some of these things have been promised to have a fix in an update.

All in all, it's a nice pocket iMovie solution.

Its a cool App, but I've tried to bring in video from a motion graphics program and external editor and it wont let me mix those clips with the ones shot directly to the iphone. Does anyone know the specs for video files shot with the iphone's video cam before exporting? I just wanted to add a little motion graphics to the intro of a travel blog I'm planning to shoot using only the iphone and the Owle Bubo.

I too am a professional director/editor and just grabbed Reel Director last night. I'd been waiting (rather unpatiently) for some basic video editing tools since iPhone 3GS came out last July and was impressed with this first foray. (I think it's the very first video editing app out there)
As mentioned above; it's got room to improve, but is a terrific first offering.

Something tells me though, that come this July – not only will we see a new iPhone (maybe HD video?) but also an iMove for iPhone app from Apple itself. Now THAT would be sweet! :)

Looks like a cool idea. I wouldn't expect it to be a fully functional editor, but I assume for things like editing a video for YouTube or the like it'd be very handy.

DOES IT WORKS WITH PHOTOS TOO?

excellent little app. I have been editing video since 1985 and snatched this one on sight.

Missing feature "Insert" video editing. :-)
