Mmm, Notify. Generic name, great software.

I’ve been keeping Notify in my menu bar for the past few months and it has been kicking emails and showing names with growl notifications — basically doing the job that the Gmail Notifier app would be doing if it didn’t take so long to refresh. I love Notify because it can log into my Gmail account and check for new messages every minute, so I’m never too far behind when I’m at the computer but away from the inbox.

A few days ago I found out over Twitter that Notify 2 was coming with some crazy new features. First of all, they’re splitting into a freemium model, much like Evernote. The free version will always be free and do what it has always done, but a $10 premium version will also be sold with more advanced features. All versions of Notify 2 will support Gmail, MobileMe, Google Apps, and Rackspace Email, but a premium users will get a few more features in the form of snakes, cats, and bears. Actually, that’s not true. With the paid version of Notify 2 you’ll have access to quick read, quick reply, and full HTML previews. Suffice it to say that I’m quite excited about the full version and will be eagerly awaiting its release.
