Percentage of iPhone Jailbreak Users Rising, At Almost 10%

uniquejailbroken_1120

Very interesting to see this week ‘s stats from Pinch Media, showing a rise in the number of unique jailbroken users to 9.5% (the highest I can recall seeing).

I find this a little surprising after all the security scares with jailbroken iPhones and various SSH-related hacks over the last couple of weeks.

If you ‘re a relative newcomer to jailbreak, remember to take care with only installing / running the SSH service when you need to use it, and make sure you change your iPhone ‘s default admin passwords.  See our step-by-step guide HERE if you need help with that.

Even more interesting the number is still going up after PrivaCy was released. Wonder how many people use PrivaCy.

Very good point. I'm guessing not so many.

Patrick I found the post about changing the passwords really really useful. I just wonder if you could put up a kind of SSH for dummies post? You say only run the SSH service when you really need to but I guess many new jailbreakers would not have a clue when or why this would be. I'm guessing this is something to do with how Cydia keeps track of what is has stored to allow me to restore but that does that mean that when I don't have Cydia running I'm not using SSH and therefore not vulnerable? Maybe I'm completely wrong? I think a succinct how does Cydia, SSH work post or link to existing post would be invaluable. Thanks a million

Glad that post was useful for you. That's a good idea on the SSH post – will think about doing one. In the meantime, a little more on your thoughts / questions here: Cydia is the leading jailbreak app store. SSH stands for secure shell – it is a commonly use service / protocol used for connecting securely to remote systems. It is used on the desktop and on mobile devices like the iPhone. SSH is not linked to Cydia as you are thinking in the comment above. Its only link to Cydia is that there are versions of it that can be installed from within Cydia – search for OpenSSH and you'll see it.

There should not be any problem with updating iTunes.

Thanks for that reply. Now I can be sure that SSH is nothing to do with me at the moment and I already changed my passwords. I'd say it would be a great service if someone wrote an app to change those passwords for those who would be a bit daunted by going into the terminal… Maybe it could even be part of the jailbreak sequence so that people are covered from the very start? Especially since the process is almost effortless with blackra1n. So easy to have good ideas for others! way beyond my abilities I'm afraid..

I think a reminder to make the changes might be the best we could expect along those lines.
