Time for Some Android Envy? Google Goggles for Android Debuts

Posted on 08 Dec 2009 by Joe Tomasone

Google has released a new Augmented Reality/Visual Search app for the Android platform called Google Goggles.   It offers two new ways to search Google: via a photograph, or with an Augmented Reality view of your surroundings.

Here ‘s Google ‘s description of the app:

Google Goggles is a visual search app for Android phones. Instead of using words, take a picture of an object with your camera phone: we attempt to recognize the object, and return relevant search results. Goggles also provides information about businesses near you by displaying their names directly in the camera preview.

Cool, huh?   So of course, the question we ‘d naturally ask here is, ‘Will it be made available for the iPhone? ‘.    While there ‘s no word yet officially, a tease of sorts appears in the description of Google Googles on the Google Labs web page (emphasis mine):

Google Goggles lets you search Google using pictures from your camera phones. We take an image as input, and using several image recognition backends (object recognition, OCR, face matching, etc), we return relevant search results.

Here ‘s hoping for a nice Christmas present from Google.  I ‘ve been good.  No, really.

I dunno, if I were Google, I'd be just about fed up with having my applications rejected by Apple.
