Quick jailbreak tip: force your unskinned iPhone icons to look skinned

gimme some skin

I’ve been following Shawn Blanc’s blog for a while now, and it was interesting to see how he eventually decided to jailbreak his device. Once jailbroken, one of the first things he set out to do was make his device more unique by going Winterboarding. His chosen themes? The excellent Matte UI (for pop-ups and buttons) and Matte Nano (for Springboard icons). But I’m not here to re-tell all of Shawn’s little choices, you can read his blog for that.

Shawn did make a very interesting discovery about mis-matched icons, though. One of the reasons I stayed away from theming was because I hated the idea of seeing normal iPhone icons beside themed ones in case the community just decided to stop updating a particular theme. This was before I had learned to replace specific icons via SSH, but Shawn’s solution sounds a bit easier: if the theme you’re using re-sizes icons (i.e. Matte Nano), then you can just uninstall an un-skinned app and re-install it through iTunes. It should then show up re-sized and appear more theme-compliant.

I haven’t tried this out, and it probably won’t with all icons, but it’s worth a shot if you’ve just got one or two pesky icons that simply refuse to conform.

  2. I run the illumine theme and whenever I have a stubborn icon, I SSH into the cache directory, find the file, and add .bak to the back of the file name. When you respring it forces the cache to update and usually updates the icon. I think this is the directory, can't remember… /private/var/mobile/Library/Caches/
