More Evidence of Apple's Interest in "iPad" Name [UPDATED]

MacRumors continues their reporting on recent evidence suggesting Apple is actively filing trademarks for the “iPad” name. This has led some to believe this will be the name of Apple’s forthcoming tablet device.

Here’s what MacRumors has uncovered regarding the “iPad” trademark here in the U.S., which appears until recently was under Fujitsu’s control.

At the time, we noted that Apple had not pursued an “iPad” trademark in the United States, ostensibly due to existing claims on the name by Fujitsu for an electronic retail inventory device. While Fujitsu initially filed its trademark application for “iPad” in March 2003, the trademark has yet to be officially accepted, and was in fact classified by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) as “abandoned” in April 2009 after Fujitsu failed to respond to a request for additional information. In June 2009, Fujitsu applied to have the application revived and, after amendment, was published for public comment and opposition on September 1, 2009.

Gawker is also reporting on documents they have found, that show Apple’s lawyers have filed three requests to the USPTO over a period of several months requesting extensions to the time allotted for parties to oppose the trademark application filed by Fujitsu. The most recent request was granted, and the opposition period has been extended to February 28th, 2010.

It’s rather intriguing that Apple has continually asked for opposition extensions, but hasn’t bothered to actually file the opposition. My guess is that Apple will wait until after the public launch of the device to try and wrestle the trademark away from Fujitsu.

[UPDATED] MacRumors is reporting that IP Application Development, an Apple dummy corporation, has filed for the iPad trademark in the U.S.
