Old Final Fantasy games coming to iPhone? Meh. [iPhone Applications]

I’ve been a gamer pretty much all of my life, but one thing I could never get onto was the love train for early Final Fantasy games. I really don’t understand how Final Fantasy I and II, where all you do is grind, level up, and throw extremely basic looking spells from the right side of the screen to kill the jagged, monster-shaped blob on the left, gives the iPhone “serious gaming cred”. However, folks over at Gizmodo, The Appera, and even Mashable seem pretty happy about it.

Why do so many gamers find the re-releases of old games on powerful new platforms so exciting? The games haven’t even been re-imagined – just given a new lick of paint. I’m not saying that new games are always better than old ones, but I would argue that Square Enix has learned a lot in the years since the first release of Final Fantasy in 1987, and most everything about current FF games – from the gameplay to the story to the graphics – is more complex, more sublime. Then again, one thing that Square Enix probably also learned along the way is that the re-releasing of a “classic” is a very good way to earn some extra revenue – especially on a super accessible marketplace like the App Store. Sigh.

The details on the re-release are still pretty spare: price and release date are still unknown.
