Quake Zones is a new iPhone app that presents over 30 years worth of earthquake data from all over the world. It ‘s the second app from AppDudes, makers of Danger Zones, which I talked about a little back in September. Here ‘s a slice of the app ‘s description:
QuakeZones uses Google Maps to pinpoint nearly a million earthquakes worldwide. More than 30 years of historical earthquake information are now available in the palm of your hand. Other earthquake apps show just 7 days of data Why not see the whole picture?
Display information in a Map or List view. Filter results alphabetically, by magnitude or proximity, or by date and time. Save areas of interest for future reference. Search broadly by Region or specifically by City with more than 300,000 cities available.
And some of the app ‘s notable features:
QuakeZones Standard Features
- Advanced Google Map technology enables superior data rendering.
- GPS Location Services provide your current location and display up to 1,000 QuakeZones.
- Historical worldwide earthquake data from multiple sources dating back to 1973.
- Earthquake updates are provided automatically as new events occur.QuakeZones Special Features
- Tap a pushpin to see earthquake details including location, date and time.
- Also see magnitude, depth, distance from your location, and more.
- Manual Refresh enables you to pan, zoom, and refresh the map on demand.
- Search for other locations by Region or City name with automatic lookups.
- Add and Save any map location to your personal list of MyZones.
- Instantly retrieve a saved location from MyZones.
- Display earthquake information for a city, state, country, or worldwide.
- Watch YouTube videos with breaking and historical earthquake news.Browse historical earthquake facts in ‘Did You Know? ‘
- Use Settings to create defaults for data presentation by year, magnitude, and number of earthquakes displayed.

I ‘ve seen the app in action in both beta and final form, and it ‘s impressive. Even in my home state of Texas, which is not known as a major earthquake area as far as I know, it ‘s a bit shocking how many quakes have actually occurred, as you watch the drop-pins rain down within the app. The farther you zoom out in the map views, the more you begin to see patterns of where there is the most activity “ in many coastal areas for instance.
Two more important things to note about QuakeZones:
— This app has been in development for many months. Its release date has nothing to do with the recent tragic events in Haiti.
— The developers of the app are donating 100% of their proceeds from the app, from its launch through until March 1, to Haiti Relief efforts:
From now until March 1, 2010, American Apps will donate 100% of the net proceeds from the sale of QuakeZones to the International Red Cross for the relief of earthquake victims in Haiti.
You can find QuakeZones in the iPhone App Store now, priced at $1.99.
*** Disclosure: A very good friend of mine, and one of my favorite dwellers on this planet is one of the partners in AppDudes, the company that publishes QuakeZones. I ‘ve been provided with a promo code for the app, but have chosen not to review it at this time. For further information regarding our site’s review policies, please see the “About” page.
