How do you stand out in a crowd of over 140 thousand?  By giving away something for free, of course!

But wait: aren ‘t there thousands of free apps already in the App Store?  Yes, that ‘s true.  In that case, you need to find a way to stick out like a sore thumb.  Or in the case of the creators of Knife Dancing, a sore hand.

By following a pattern on your iPhone, you will stab an object between a virtual hand on your iPhone.  Knife Dancing is a free download in the App Store and comes equipped with a nice green crayon for stabbin ‘ purposes.  So where does the sore hand come in, you ask?

Via in-app purchase.  For $0.99, users can purchase a pen and three different knives to use in the game.

So how does this app stand out?

By offering users who purchase the additional content a code to send to another friend to download the add-on pack for free.

Once you download the additional items, you receive a code that can be redeemed inside the app itself.  This can be verbally given to a friend or sent wirelessly through the app.  Not only is the app a ‘buy one, get one ‘ offer, but it makes sharing the app extremely easy.

Do you think this type of marketing will be adopted by other developers in the App Store?
