After about a month of solid use, I’ve taken my MusicSkin (review) off of my iPhone. It served me very well and wasn’t much worse for wear than it was 30 days ago, despite daily abuse. Scratches don’t really show up on the patterned sticker, and it did make my iPhone 3GS just a little easier to hold. One really, really impressive aspect here is how well well the corners held. I had messed them up during the initial installation and went through a little panic: corners just love to peel away over days and weeks until you’re forced to take the whole film off because it looks like Origami-Gone-Wrong on the back of your bloody phone. The MusicSkins really stick to their guns (if you put them on guns), but it turns out they stick very tightly to their iPhones as well.
Taking the giant sticker off was a lot easier than putting it on, but it did leave behind a fair amount of sticky gray residue on the device. This took about three or four minutes to clean up using just my nails and some cloth, but the iPhone does look like new after. I actually don’t mind the residue because it means the application of a MusicSkin doesn’t take a good 30-60 minutes (like with the InvisibleShield). There are a couple of other contenders in the designer film market now (ZAGGskins is one name that comes to mind), but I’d be happy to buy MusicSkins again. Their website design is a bit busy for my tastes, but I really enjoyed the experience of designing my own $15 custom skin.
