Video Review: Red Conquest! [iPhone App Reviews]

[reviewed version 1.01]

John Kooistra has a great sense of style, and that really comes through in his games. Blue Defense wasn’t one of my favourite games, but it did have a very interesting little take on basic Missile Command gameplay: you rotated your iPhone literally 360 degrees to fight off enemies swarming from every direction. Blue Attack! was a completely different game in the same Red vs Blue War setting, and it was the first iPhone games to deliver a truly chilling gameplay experience. Your little blue fighter was powerful, but it was dwarfed by the titanic enemy carriers and battleships. It was like David and Goliath and Goliath and Goliath…uhh, you get the picture.

Red Conquest is Kooistra’s most ambitious project to date, and it’s amazing to see this colouful game world come to life as a real time strategy game (RTS). The controls are really quite complex, but they’re an interesting and workable approach to real time strategy on such a small device. I can’t wait for future updates!

Red Conquest!
is available for $3.99 on the App Store.
