Review: Quickie for the iPhone [iPhone App Reviews]

Quickie is a well-designed to-do application for your iPhone.  It features a great interface and some nice functionality that the standard Apple notes app doesn ‘t provide.  It was designed for those that have a difficult time keeping track of the variety of tasks in their lives.

If that sounds a lot like you, you may want to keep reading.

When you open up Quickie for the first time, you ‘ll see two buttons and a message asking you to create a new list.  Tap the plus sign to do so, and then start creating your first to-do list.  You can go about this one of two ways:  1) create a title for this list of to-do ‘s ( ‘grocery list, ‘ for example) and then tap save; or 2) create a title for this list, and then tap return to add some more items to the list of to-do ‘s.

If you create only the title, you will be taken inside that list and be prompted to add some items to the list.  If you go with the second option, you will be taken to your main screen with all of your different to-do lists.

Each list shows the title in bold, a few items from your list, the total number of items left to do in that category, and the total number of items in that category.  If you want to re-order your to-do lists, tap the edit button to drag your lists in whatever order you want.  To edit one of your lists, simply tap it.

Once inside, there are several options.  To delete an item off your list, you can tap edit and then delete it or simply swipe across the item to delete.  To mark the item as completed, but still leave it on your list, just tap it.  The circle next to the item will change from orange to green with a check mark.  To add items to your to-do list, tap edit, and now you ‘ll be able to edit the text of any item already on the list, add a new item altogether, and re-order the items on your list

The one gripe I have with this app is what is displayed once you open a particular to-do list.  Say you have ten items in one to-do list, but you have three marked as completed.  On the main screen, it will show that you have seven left to-do and ten total.  By tapping on the list, you will be taken to the edit screen where, by default, you see only the items left to-do.  At the bottom, you ‘ll notice three viewing options:  All items (see everything one the list, done or not), Done (only see completed tasks), To do (only see tasks left to do).  I may be in the minority, but I would prefer to see the entire list by default.  It ‘d be nice to be able to choose a default view under settings.

Speaking of settings, there are only two:  Use system fonts (I tried it both ways and didn ‘t notice a difference) and Use sounds.  The sounds are minimal, but add a nice touch, so I left them on.

The main screen you see when you open the app gives you a nice overview of your different to-do lists.  It would be nice, however, to have some more viewing options.  For instance, I could do without the text between the items count and the title that displays a few characters of the items on your list.  This would save space on the main screen, which would be valuable to those of us with several different to-do lists.

Despite these minor complaints, Quickie is a very capable to-do application.  I have always said I would definitely use the standard Apple notes app more often if it were easier and quicker to delete items or mark them as completed.  Now that I have Quickie, that is no problem.

What makes it stand out even more is its superior design.  I ‘ve come across many apps that have a lot of functionality, but are lacking design wise.  This app feels like it was professionally designed, and that ‘s a good thing.  I highly recommend you give Quickie a try.

Quickie is available now in the App Store for $1.99.
