F is for Falling asleep while this particular game loads. It’s also for falling from 40,000 feet and forcing your little skydiver through flocks of birds, over hot air balloons, and past the deadly rotors of passing planes, for as long as you can before you meet your inevitable death.
But let’s just get back to the first thing I said: this $0.99 title, which feels a bit like Doodle Jump played I’m reverse, takes a whopping 12 seconds to load. Given that Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars can load up in three seconds flat, I’m really not sure why this game takes so long to get into.
I’m giving the developer the benefit of the doubt here and am assuming that the long load time will be addressed in a timely fashion (soon, please!). Otherwise, I don’t really see too many people playing this title more than once. I think of casual games as something quick and easy to get into – and I’d wager that holding gamers’ attention spans while staying within the $0.99 bracket requires some quick and accessible gameplay,
Once you do get past the loading screen you’ll be treated to a live main menu: you’ll see the option to start a game here, but you can already test out the tilt controls and see if they’re to your liking (tap the top-right corner to change to touch controls).
The game itself is quite simple, but it has a charm similar to Doodle Jump’s, since everything on-screen is apparently hand-drawn and animated. Your character jumps out of a plane and it’s your job to get him as close to the ground as possible before you inevitably smack face-first into something harder, sharper, or more explosive than you.
As charming as the hand-drawn animations are, they can also be a little abrupt – especially when an animation seemingly stutters at around the same time as the short soundtrack repeats itself. The game isn’t laggy, but it sure can feel like it is based on how it looks and sounds sometimes.
F is for Faling is a very simple $0.99 title. There are no online scoreboards yet, no Facebook integration (thank god), and it’s still a little rough around the edges. However, it is a charming title in the same vein as Doodle Jump and Canabalt, and you can tell that there was genuine effort put into making this a fun title, so it could still be worth a look as long as the developer addresses the epic loading time soon.
