SXSW Play – Nice iPhone Guide for SXSW 2010

SXSW Play iPhone app

SXSW Play, or SXSW® Play -Music, Film, Interactive to use its full title “ is a new app that helps you discover what ‘s going at this year ‘s SXSW festival next month.

The official new media discovery app for the SXSW 2010 Music, Film, and Interactive conferences.  Includes a wealth of rich media from musicians, films, and interactive panels which will be featured at the festival in Austin, TX from March 12-21.  With this app at your fingertips, you’ll never be bored in line again!

Austin is my hometown and I ‘m looking forward to this year ‘s SXSW “ so I grabbed this free app a couple night ago when I first spotted it.  It ‘s a slick little Intro and taster for what will be on offer at the Music, Film, and Interactive festivals this year.

Here ‘s a rundown on the app ‘s features, from its description page:

Features:
–    Listen to mp3s of featured musicians, watch trailers and clips from films, and get full length podcasts of interactive panels, all on your iPhone.
–    Discover Screen – A fun and exciting way to navigate SXSW’s 2010 lineup using the iPhone’s built in accelerometer.
–    Browse Screen – Navigate the Film, Interactive and Music mp3s and videos by category.
–   Favorites – Build a list of bands, films and Interactive panels you don’t want to forget.  Find when and where they’re playing and check them out at the festival, or just experience them on your iPhone.
–    Constantly Growing – As SXSW continues to present the world’s best line-up at our Music, Film and Interactive festivals, the app will grow too, including immediate posting of the Interactive panel podcasts during the event.

Here’s how you can discover SXSW® 2010:
1.    Discover Screen – Each conference has it’s own color and shape to help you navigate.
⁃    Film – Blue Rectangles
⁃    Music – Green Squares
⁃    Interactive – Orange Circles
2.    Play – Using the iPhone’s built in accelerometer, tilt your iPhone any which way to uncover everything that is SXSW. New items are constantly added.
3.    Touch – Experience musicians, films and interactive panels by tapping on the floating thumbnails. Get details, showtimes, videos, podcasts and more!
4.    Heart – If you see something that tickles your fancy, tap the heart icon to mark it as a favorite so that you don’t forget about it!
5.    Filter – Not interested in all three conferences? Just looking for a new film? You can tap the Music and Interactive buttons once to filter those conferences out. Tap again to bring them back.
6.    Browse – If you’re in a hurry and looking for something specific, you can always browse SXSW by conference by tapping Browse at the top of the screen.

I like this app quite a bit.  Here are a few more screencaps of it in action:

In ‘Discover ‘ mode, items sort of rain slowly down the main screen “ with content on Film, Music, and Interactive events if you keep all three selected via a quick tap, or from just one or two that you select if you prefer

The rain of items makes it feel like a nice discovery method.

You can also switch over to Browse mode if the rain gets too heavy (as it did for me after a bit) “ and look through static lists for whatever strikes your fancy

And of course the app is quite media-rich “ so you can not just see detailed information for artists / events you ‘re interested in, but also listen to songs from them and view video of conference events and so on

I ‘m sure we ‘ll see a number of SXSW apps emerge as we get closer to the festival start in mid-March “ but this is a keeper for me.  It ‘s a very nice looking app and has a slick but easy to use interface that suits its ‘discovery ‘ purpose very well.

You can find SXSW® Play – Music, Film, Interactive in the App Store now, and it ‘s a free app.

Are any of you planning to come to SXSW this year?
