Apple Banning iPhone Hackers from the App Store [iPhone jailbreak]

banned from the App Store

Just days after a scrappy young iPhone hacked discovered an unlock exploit for OS 3.1.3 baseband 05.12.01, Sherif Hashim received an ominous message on his iPhone after attempting to log into iTunes: ‘This Apple ID has been disabled for security reasons. ‘ Proving that this is not an isolated incident, fellow hacker iH8sn0w responded to Hashim to let him know the very same thing happened to him after he released an exploit known as XEMN.

Wow.  This is a bit of an unexpected and nasty step by Apple in the continual cat and mouse game between their security folks and those who create iPhone jailbreak software and other exploits of the iPhone OS platform.

I don ‘t see how this is anything much more than a grand gesture by Apple in the ongoing war.  It ‘s hardly difficult for these two individual hackers, or anyone else who is concerned about being targeted for this, to create accounts with innocent names that have nothing in common with their public ‘hacker ‘ identities.

As for those of us who jailbreak our own iPhones, I think the moral of the story for now is don ‘t use ‘musclenerd ‘ or ‘geohot ‘ as your iTunes store ID. :)

What do you all think?  Does this make you more worried about jailbreaking your iPhone?

Well, this wouldn’t be the first time a company did this. Microsoft bans users from XBOX live, if it detects a hacked XBOX. I can see Apple doing this at some point, if the software piracy increases. I used to Jailbreak, and had some many issues with lag, and battery life, it wasn’t worth it to me, so I went back.

I swear Apple is TRYING to destroy the good thing they have going. How do they not realize that a very large number of legit AppStore developers are in fact jailbroken as well? How do they not see that if they alienate the geek crowd that pushes the device to new limits, said geeks will move elsewhere. Apple, and its supporters, do not seem to understand that people WILL follow. The low percentage of jailbreak users is meaningless. That low percentage of users contains the developers that are writing their 'legit' apps. Developers are usually the type of person that wants to get the most out of their device. Yes, they will try to sell their apps to the largest audience possible if it can conform to Apples restrictions, but if they can't even use the device how they want to use it personally, they'll find another platform to develop on.
