Scanner Pro is, you guessed it, a scanner app for your iPhone. It allows you to take pictures of documents, edit their appearance, add multiple pages, and convert them into a PDF for E-mailing or file transfer purposes.
Does it work as advertised? Yes, it does. But just how useful you find the app depends on what exactly you ‘re looking to get out of it. If you constantly find yourself in situations where you need to scan multiple-page documents, then Scanner Pro might be for you. If, however, this is something you do only occasionally, then it ‘s probably not worth the price of admission.
To use Scanner Pro, you just need to take pictures with your iPhone, or even use the ones already stored on your phone. You can then edit the pictures with grayscale, contrast, and brightness. Once you ‘re satisfied with how all all of the pictures look, you can rearrange their order or delete as many as you like. Now it ‘s time to share your document.
Scanner Pro offers a number of options for transferring your scanned documents. You can upload them to your iDisk and Dropbox accounts, E-mail them, send them to Evernote, print, or transfer them directly to your Mac or PC. The app comes with a very helpful user guide, so you should have no problem finding your way around.
When using this app, I would recommend not taking pics inside the app. Just use the standard camera app and add them to Scanner Pro later. The reason is this: if you take a pic within the app, you cannot swap it between different PDF files. For instance, I created two different two-page documents with pics I took within the app. I wanted to essentially merge the two by adding two of the pics to the other set, but the app doesn ‘t allow that. By taking the pics outside of the Scanner Pro app, you ‘ll make things a whole lot easier on yourself.
As far as options go, there aren ‘t many. The most notable setting is the default page size for your scanned images. You have nine options. Also, if you want to secure your PDF file, you can password-protect it.
My main gripe with the app is that it doesn ‘t offer anything really unique or eye-catching. While there are some photo-editing options, your pictures won ‘t look that much better, if at all, than by using the standard camera app and any number of free photo-editing apps in the App Store. Yes, this app does allow you to create PDF documents with your pictures. And, yes, it does allow you to create a multi-page document. Those two items, along with the ease of sharing your scanned documents, are the main benefits of the app. Unless you need your images to be linked together in a multi-page document and/or need it in PDF format, this app doesn ‘t offer you anything you can ‘t find elsewhere, especially if you have Readdle ‘s other fantastic app: ReaddleDocs.
At $0.99, this app would make a lot more sense. For me personally, the only thing I see myself using it for is to send multi-page documents. Beyond that, it doesn ‘t do much for me. But on the plus side, with the features it does offer, the app incorporates them nicely in an easy-to-use app. I just found myself scratching my head in search of a really good use for this app.
Scanner Pro is available now in the App Store for $4.99.
