iPhone: Amazing – No App Says This Better than Brushes

Iglesia de San Pedro, Cuenca by la legra negra

There are a good number of iPhone apps that are touted as having a large ‘wow factor ‘; apps that many of us like to show off to friends and non iPhone users.  Shazam “ the app that lets you quickly identify ‘what ‘s that song ‘ just by asking it to listen and analyze for a few moments “ is one that ‘s often cited.  Many games probably fit the bill as well “ from some of the super clever physics games through to action-packed ones ported across from major gaming platforms.

For a long time now though, it has been clear to me that the one single app that most clearly demonstrates the power and the possibilities of the iPhone is Brushes, the iPhone drawing / painting app. Ironically, I myself cannot draw even a stick figure in a way that would be recognizable to anyone “ I am beyond useless at any form of drawing.  But I enjoy the heck out of seeing art done by those who have talent for it.

Over the last year or so, I ‘ve found huge pleasure in seeing all the amazing artwork that has been generated by scores of artists using the Brushes app (and some other excellent ones as well).

The image at the top of this post is ‘Iglesia San Pedro, Cuenca ‘ by Joseandrés Guijarro “ aka la legra negra.  It was done with the Brushes app. Jose Andres is one of my favorite iPhone artists, amongst many that I ‘ve discovered over recent months who are producing stunning images with the iPhone and Brushes.

Here ‘s one more image that has stuck with me ever since I first saw it:

It ‘s called ‘The Wooden Sword ‘ and was created by Luis Peso using Brushes.

Many renowned artists round the world are embracing the iPhone not just as ‘another ‘ medium on which to produce work, but as their preferred canvas for doing so.  From David Hockney “ probably Britain ‘s most acclaimed living artist “ to Jorge Columbo, whose iPhone / Brushes created cityscape of New York was featured on the cover of The New Yorker magazine.

These are just a few quick examples though.  There is tons of wonderful iPhone artwork being produced every day.  Truly fantastic stuff that will have you shaking your head and wondering how on earth anyone could produce something so beautiful on a smartphone device.

Here are just a few places you can go to see some of this amazing iPhone / Brushes art:

One more bit of good news if you enjoy art and especially iPhone art: the enthusiasm level of many of these iPhone artists for the upcoming iPad seems sky-high.  I think we will see even more spectacular art created on the iPad once it comes out.

What do you all think?  Is there an app you think shows off the amazing possibilities of the iPhone better than Brushes?
