My Name Is Patrick and I’m a Lazy App Updater

iPhone app update

They say the first step to conquering an addiction is admitting that you have it.  Now I realize that being a lazy app updater is nowhere near as serious as most addictions, but it is a very annoying habit and one I have trouble getting past.

What brought this to mind is that last night I found myself faced with no less than 31 app updates when I popped into the App Store to search for an app I was interested in.  As often happens the big number in the Updates badge distracted me a bit, made me feel disorganized and lame for letting the number get so damn large.

So rather than get on with finding the app I was interested in, I moved over to the Updates section and applied a couple, then a few more, and didn ‘t end up stopping until I was down to just one left “ and that one won ‘t be going anywhere soon as it the update that takes away iStat ‘s ability to free up memory.

Applying those 30 updates was a pain in the arse, and it took a fair little while as I applied them individually “ because that way I can duck out of the whole operation much more easily than if I do Update All.

The thing is, this unpleasant little scenario is one I ‘m all too familiar with.  Each time it happens and I pile up a huge list of pending updates and I finally get round to applying them, I promise myself it will not happen again.  I swear to myself I ‘ll stay on top of it, slapping updates on as soon as they appear.  Sometimes I stick to that for a little while, but it never lasts.

Pretty soon I ‘m looking at three or four updates, seeing that they only contain minor bug fixes (often for bugs I ‘ve not experienced) and unexciting new features, and choosing to skip them again.  And then before I know it, I ‘m staring at 25 or more waiting updates again.

Anybody else suffer from this annoying affliction?  If so, have you found any ways to beat it? Is there a group to go to, where folks break down and cry and share their stories?

LOL I was just the same way especially when I had so much trouble with an update showing, I update it and it is still showing as needing to be updated. I now make myself check one a week and do updates. I do them from iTunes on my PC though as it is faster/easier.

I do check the whats new on many of them to make sure I want it. Plus only doing it once a week lets the update be out long enough that if it has issues I hear about it.

I just update my Apps in iTunes and it is quick and easy.

Every morning while I have my coffee and check out my RSS & emails, I update my Podcasts & check for App updates and then sync the iPhone. Takes a few seconds (a few seconds of active work, a few minutes of downloading / syncing).

Yeah – I guess that's the other meeting I need to go to – the 'I hate cabling up my iPhone to sync' club :)

@Patrick think of it as simply charging but since it is plugged in I might as well update ;)
