Movies Now! updated to 1.2.1: removes ads, increases lookup speed, gets me excited [iPhone App Updates]
Movies Now! I can’t talk about this app without slamming both hands on my desk out of sheer excitement, and I always end up knocking my iPhone dock over in the process, so let’s get this post over with quickly.
The latest update not only takes out all of the ads from the free version of the app (woot!), but it’s also much faster to boot. It’s probably still just a little bit slower than the Movies/Flixster app, but the gorgeous UI is worth that extra half second of waiting. I also like the approach in Movies Now! a little more because of the first app tab, labeled Now! *DESK SLAM*, lets you know about all of the nearest (and soonest) movie show times based on your current locations. It’s a great idea, and it’s presented beautifully.
The only catch is that as of version 1.2.1 (this one), Movies Now! *DESK SLAM* will only support OS 3.0+, so make sure you’re updated.
Ok I installed this based on your recommendation. The 'Now!' tab is definitely a nice idea. However, what is wrong with it? It shows nearby movies but if I tap the arrow for details on the movie then tap on showtimes, it says no showtimes available. If there are no showtimes available how did it know to show it on the Now! tab?
Also, it doesn't seem to allow you to increase the radius for the theaters shown in the Now! tab and the built-in radius is extremely small. The only theater it shows for me is 4 miles away while there are many theaters less than 7 miles away. Anyway, thanks for the review but the app could use a lot of work. I'll be sticking with Flixster for now!
Weird, the Now! Tab definitely works for me. I tried it on a couple of movies and showtimes before writing this. Good point about the radius, though. I consider that fine because I’m downtown and prefer showtimes within walking distance, but I forgot about driving

It won't show the showtimes screen for any of the nearby theaters. If I tap on a theater, it shows what movies are playing and underneath each movie it shows the times. However, if I tap the arrow on the right side of the movie then tap Showtimes at the top it says No Showtimes. I'm assuming this would be how I would use movietickets.com to buy my tickets. Maybe no theaters around here support movietickets.com ? Either way, thanks again for the review. I wish it worked, but no Movies Now! *SLAMS DESK* for me.
Excellent, the desk slamming is catching on. Pity the actual app doesn't work for you, though. I don't see the buy movie button for every theater, but it does work for most of them here in Toronto.
“Now Playing” lives on my home screen because it predicts how much I’ll like a movie based on my Netflix star-ratings. I find it accurate, fast, and I like that I can manage my Netflix, see showstimes, read reviews, get directions, and view trailers all inside one free adless app.
