PogoPlank 2.0 – Status Update [iPhone Jailbreak Apps]

PogoPlank iPhone springboard replacement

As I ‘ve mentioned here many times, I ‘m a huge fan of PogoPlank, the iPhone springboard replacement app (for jailbreak users).  I ‘ve used it continuously since I first discovered it back in October.  It allows me to happily run 160+ apps and have just one home screen.

Version 1.x of PogoPlank does have some drawbacks though, and I ‘ve been looking forward to the major new 2.0 version for some time now.  Today I got a chance to get a status from jaywalker, PogoPlank ‘s lead developer.  Hit the jump for some details on this

Although there is not yet an expected release date, it is sounding like it is not far off, and also like it will be well worth the wait.  Here ‘s some of what I learned today:

Work on the 2.0 backend is just about done.  The only changes at this point are going to be bug fixes and perhaps one or two improvements

Work on the frontend and planket interaction is also almost done:

*** Plankets are PogoPlank ‘s term for items that are very similar / identical to widgets and will be used in PogoPlank 2.0 “ one of the most exciting things about the upcoming update.

The biggest remaining holdups are mainly on the business side of things, as well as on implementing a store where plankets (add-on widgets) from third party developers will be available.

The only ‘built in ‘ plankets will be the wheel, dock, and possibly one other.  Plankets from third party devs that are expected to be ready by the time 2.0 is released include search (HURRAH!), Twitter, weather, and clock.  Anyone can create plankets and look to have them added to the in-app plankets store.

A smoother wheel will be part of Version 2.0.

Finally, some good news on the ability to uninstall apps and more “ jaywalker ‘s answer when I asked about whether we ‘ll be able to do this in 2.0:

Yes! Both app store apps and cydia apps with cydelete. Also we have badges and AppStore download progress bars :) .

Needless to say, I ‘m very excited about PogoPlank 2.0 and can ‘t wait to try it out.  Hopefully the wait will not be too much longer.

I kinda lost faith that a meaningful update would ever come. Don't want to get excited yet. There has been a fair amount of BS from devs in past. But it does sound good. Thanks so much for the update.

Id still rather have something other then a wheel design, something more along the lines of infinidock that can be placed at the top of the screen or in vertical mode along the side. Any chance you can ask about that next time you are in contact with them?

    • sysrage says:

Did you look at Infiniboard? chpwn is releasing more or less a vertical mode full screen springboard. I think once people start making some awesome 'plankets', Pogoplank will be amazing. For now, I'm much more interested in chpwn's Infiniboard.

That's the vertical scrolling tweak right? If so, yes it looks interesting – but I still prefer the overall PogoPlank concept I think. Having said that, I'' certainly give the new chpwn one a spin when it comes out.

Weren't they going on about 2.0, like, half a year ago?

    • patrickj says:

I don't think so. I don't think the app has even been around for half a year as yet. My recollection is they first thought it might be out by the end of 2009. So yes it id running behind their original anticipated schedule, but I think the whole creating a store and business side of things is very challenging to deal with. I'm assuming that as developers, their skills as store creators and lawyers are no too finely honed. :)

  6. Glad you like my glasklart pogoplank theme. It’s great to see it being used :)

  7. Watcher says:

These guys are taking so long that it might end up being a non-event. There are plenty of other things happening that might soon overshadow these long awaited improvements.

  8. Ramses says:

When will version 2.0 of PogoPlank?

  9. I am waiting patiently for this next release. I am extremely excited for the progress bar, as well as the planket market and the allowance of third party development. It makes sense to set yourself up as the distributor rather than have third parties constantly compete with you. I just hope it comes out today. Especially for the Ipad!

  10. bobzarry says:

I think this is dead in the water

  11. Rabid Treetiger says:

Yeah it is. There'll be a better springboard replacement soon though :)

  12. Rippedoff says:

And still no update…. Just bought this app and it does not work….. Laaaaaaaame

  13. ashley says:

will it be able to work on IOS 5.0.1? I have been trying to get this on my phone and no such luck :(
