Quick Tip: use your iPhone case and Xtand, too! [iPhone Accessories]

I love my Xtand ($40), but it’s just too bad that it can’t accommodate an iPhone with a case on — or can it?

I’ve found that removing the rubber feet on the aluminum dock allows me enough space to fit most cases, essentially making most any case a dockable one. The fit is still surprisingly good, despite the fact that the iPhone is actually sitting on top of the  support arms, instead of resting inside them. My iPhone is no longer completely snug, but it’s still very easy to use while on the Xtand, and I can still charge it while slinging files around through Pastebot around and answering text messages with biteSMS,  which is awesome

I find this workaround works best with plastic or silicone cases — the more friction, the better. I’ve tried my d3o iBand, 4Voi Lorem (which is about the size of an InCase Slider), and Vaja iVolution GT, and all of them fit well enough. You can even open the flap on the GT while it’s docked and charge the iPhone up, but I stopped doing this because the aluminum feet were starting to dig into the leather.

So if you’ve been looking to buy an Xtand but wondered about how you’d make do with a case, there might still be an option for you. As long as your case is similar in size and texture to an InCase Slider, your armoured iPhone has a pretty good chance of feeling at home in this gorgeous aluminum stand.
