Today we ‘re continuing our series called Desert Island Apps. It ‘s based on a very long-running and brilliant BBC Radio show called ‘Desert Island Discs ‘. The premise of Desert Island Discs is simple and wonderful “ a guest is invited to choose the eight musical pieces (originally records) they would take with them if they were stranded on a desert island.
In our case of course we ‘re not interested in our guests ‘ choice of music. What we want to know is which six iPhone apps they would take with them if stranded on an island. We ‘re leaving the playing field pretty wide open for them “ letting them assume they ‘ve got WiFi and full connectivity on their island.
Today ‘s guest is Robin Rhys. Robin hosts, writes and produces the superb App Advice Daily video podcast, which I ‘m a huge fan of. Here ‘s a little more about her:
Robin Rhys is the senior editor for AppAdvice.com, and the host, writer and producer of App Advice Daily. She received a B.A. from California State University, Northridge in Broadcast Journalism and Political Science. As a tech journalist, she focuses on mainly iPhone specific news and reviews, and spends most of her days digging through the App Store.

So I’m stranded on a desert Island, but I have wifi… What apps would I need to stop me from going completely insane? Well I’ve had a bit of practice at this since some of my friends refer to my AppAdvice office as a dessert island. And it’s true… I never leave, but I do spend lots of time playing with apps. Alright back to the business at hand, if I had to choose six, these would be it:
1. CNN
Staying sane on a dessert island is my first and main concern. With CNN I’ll be able to know what’s going on in the rest of society, and be ensured that I’m not alone out there. With CNN I’ll be able to stay on top of the news cycle… even if it doesn’t apply to me.
2. Beejive
I love to chat, so not being around people would likely be the hardest part about being stranded – besides the fact that I wouldn’t have a proper shower of course. But if I had Beejive I’d still be able to chat it up with my homies, and of course my fans. I’ll be able to chat with all my AIM buddies, my facebook friends, fans and foes and of course all my girls on Gmail. I’ve said it once, and I’ll say it again – Beejive is the ultimate chat client.
3. Pandora
I’m sure I’m not the first person in this series to select this app. If you are a music lover, than you will have and love Pandora. There’s nothing like the same old music library for years on end to make one stuck on an island go insane. This is why Pandora rocks so hard, and is exactly why it will be with me while I’m stranded. Pandora lets you listen to endless music, and the best part is, it plays what you like - for the most part anyway. You can purchase new music from within the app if you hear something that sparks your fancy. Either way Pandora will keep you sane and keep your music needs well met.
4. Words with Friends
Best Scrabble app out there! I could play for hours and still not get board. Plays as many games at a time as you want. Play with friends, or with random apponents. If no one plays their word back, just start a new game. I can see it now… I’ll play so much that I’ll become the best scrabble player in the World! Too bad I’ll be stuck on this island. It’s O.K. though, I’ll still be able to show off through Words with Friends.
5. Facebook
Alright I won’t select a twitter app, because how boring would my tweets be?! But I will select Facebook. That’s right, I said it. With Facebook I’ll still be able to keep tabs on all my old friends and colleagues even from a far. I’ll see how people are growing and changing, which will then remind me of how I’m stranded, and not going anywhere. Alright so it’s probably the most depressing app I could have, but I’d still like to have it. A little emotional cutting never hurts.
6. Kindle for iPhone
I have to agree with Marc Tassin on this one, and choose Kindle as my final app. I love to read and couldn’t imagine being stuck somewhere without access to a library. With Kindle for iPhone you can buy books right from the app. I could buy Spanish and French language books and master them. I could also get classic novels as well as up to date fiction. Basically it’s like having a library at your finger tips. Kindle for iPhone will contribute to my sanity while stranded, that’s for sure.
