UPDATE: iGovernment has fixed the picture viewing issues previously mentioned in the review.
iGovernment features a collection of news, videos, and pictures from various government agencies and departments. The “Featured News” section, offers a news feed section reporting on various government agencies and departments. The stories are organized and listed by date. When you find an article to read, just simply tap on it and you are redirected to the article. The news articles are perfectly formatted to the iPhone for reading and you even have the capability to use “pinch and zoom”. When reading an article, you will notice a tab bar at the top of the screen which makes it easy to navigate from story to story. You are also given the ability to share the article via Twitter and e-mail.
iGovernment offers two multimedia sections. The photo section is organized by government agency/department. Each section offers a wide range of pictures that capture moments from The White House, Army, Navy, Air Force, NASA, State Department, and the Department of Energy. When you tap on a picture from the gallery , the picture then resizes to your phone with a photo caption at the bottom. You navigate by simply swiping. like in the default photo app. The photo section also offers the ability to use “pinch and zoom”. I did have trouble viewing some of the pictures which resulted in a white screen from Flickr stating, “This photo is currently unavailable”. However, the photos I did see in the Navy section were high quality and great to view.
The “Featured Videos” section also offers a wide range of videos from government agencies and departments. The videos are organized by date and they all have YouTube support. You can also share the videos via Twitter and e-mail. There is also a “Search” section which gives you the ability to find particular news stories. The section of the app titled “More” features all of the news articles assorted by government agency or department. It’s a nice way to find filtered news stories if you are only want to read articles about a particular department or branch of government.
iGovernment news feed, according to the developer’s App Store page, features content from: The White House, House of Representatives, the Senate, Supreme Court, Federal Courts, NASA, Department of Defense, Marines, Navy, Army, Airforce, Coast Guard, State Department, Homeland Security, Department of Justice, Labor, Treasury, Energy, and Health and Human Services.
If you like to stay on top of political and government news, this app does the job. My only complaint would be some of the pictures are currently not loading correctly. iGovernment is easy to navigate and is a great way to share news stories.
iGovernment is available for $1.99 in the App Store.
