According to MacStories.net there was an update to Cydia last night that should have improved loading times and improved the error checking when refreshing sources. I downloaded the update, which turned out to be two back-to-back updates that looked very similar, and feel like I’m right back where I started. Cydia still takes a good 40 seconds to load up, at which point it will reload all the data (I have no idea why), and then take another 10-15 seconds to become usable.
That’s nearly a minute of loading time on my iPhone 3GS. Keep in mind that I’ve added just one extra repository source to the application, so I’m basically running a default Cydia setup. The screenshot up top was what I saw today after a few tests of the startup time.
I could understand it if the 40-second loading time was a first time caching deal that Cydia had to undergo after any kind of update, but this load time is always there. I could load the application up twice without making any changes, and I’d still be waiting one minute for each instance. Anyway, I’ll end this note on a more positive note: now that I have Rock to use for most everyday instances, I have hope that Cydia can only get better from here on out because it needs to.
