Very Quick Look – World Cup Countdown for iPhone [iPhone App Reviews]

World Cup Countdown iPhone app

The World Cup is my absolute favorite sports event; which is saying quite a bit because I’m a huge sports fan across the board.  So an iPhone app with World Cup in its title will always get at least a look from me – especially as matches begin less than 100 days from now.

Speaking of numbers of days until kickoff, that’s what World Cup Countdown will keep you on top of – exactly how many days are left before the tournament opens.  The app also touts itself as a digital photoframe, ‘displaying a series of beautiful images of South Africa’.

With all due respect to South Africa – which does look like a beautiful country – the photoframe stuff is where the app is a big fail for me.  I gave it a look because I’m a huge fan of the World Cup, not of South African landscapes, as lovely as they may be.

For an app like this to fulfill even just its short-term novelty sort of value, it needs to include images of the World Cup itself – great goals and great players from past tournaments, and more of the same from the qualifying rounds for this year’s tournament. For now, this app feels more like it was produced by the South African Tourist Board, rather than by or for World Cup fans.

You can find World Cup Countdown in the App Store now, and it’s a free app.

The ESPN World Cup app has a countdown, but also has a full schedule and news on each team. Also free

After comparing some other worldcup apps, I decided to get an app called "SouthAfrica-Fan.com" and it really seems to have everything, including YouTube videos and Push Notifications. I think its another hot app for the season. : )
