Doodle Jump for the iPhone is something like a developer ‘s fairy tale: two brothers set out to make a game using only the talents they ‘ve got at hand, and end up striking gold. They keep pushing out minor updates, and the game just keeps selling.

Tomorrow morning, Lima Sky will be announcing that Doodle Jump has just surpassed 3 million sales ” a feat, they claim, is a first for any Indie development house.

That’s a slice of MobileCrunch’s report yesterday on the astounding success of Doodle Jump on the iPhone.  That’s 3 million sales too, not just downloads.

A few more things that leap off the page in the MobileCrunch report:

Doodle Jump passed the 1 million download mark less than three months ago.  You would think after that milestone that the momentum might slow, or sales might ease off.  Perhaps this time the coverage the first milestone got has helped continue to fuel sales?  Or maybe it’s just that great an app – I’m ashamed to say I’ve not tried it yet.

Lima Sky – the publishers of Doodle Jump – are a small indie development studio founded by two brothers.  MobileCrunch reckons Doodle Jump may have yielded them over $2 million so far.

I always love a good iPhone App Store success story, especially those involving smaller, indie developers – and this one sure fits the bill.

How many of you are Doodle Jumpers?  I need to give it a go soon. :)
