ngmoco releases Eliminate: CO-OP for iPhone

Eliminate Pro fans looking for a change of pace have something new to play with this weekend: if you’re tired of endless deathmatches, why not try some Eliminate CO-OP for a change? I’ve played a few rounds of the game and have a few impressions to share.

CO-OP’s action is very similar to the versus mode in Eliminate Pro, except the AI enemies come in waves, and there’s an almost RPG-ish element to the whole ordeal, since corpses will sometimes drop loot that you can pick up. However, if you want to speed the leveling process up, you’re always free to buy more credits — which is where that addictive “freemium” model comes into play. You can always play the game as long as you have an internet connection, but you’ll only earn more credits (for buying gear) as long as your personal account has power cells, which drain a little bit after every match. The only way to regenerate your cell, like in the original Eliminate, is to wait a couple of hours for a recharge, or buy more power cells with real cash.

In the few rounds I played I saw a handful of the 10 new levels offered in CO-OP, but I never played with more than one person at a time. The game stated that there were nearly 3000 players online, and yet I was only being matched with one other person to fight off seven waves of enemies (topped off with a boss battle) before the 3-minute self destruct timer went off. To make a long story short: we were always horrifically outgunned and outmanned, and I haven’t “won’ a co-op round yet.

One curious thing I haven’t quite figured out yet is whether the dropped loot is shared amongst party members. Credits will occasionally drop from the enemies, and it’s usually a real distraction to the team when everybody stops fighting to run and pick the money up. I’m hoping ngmoco addressed this and evenly splits all of the credits between the players — but being a newbie, it’s hard for me to tell.

Getting started in Eliminate: CO-OP is completely free. All you need to do is visit this iTunes link. If you’ve already played the game before then you can use your account with all of your weapons in this new game mode — but you still have to visit that link and download the new app.
