More Evidence of Multitasking in iPhone 3.2 SDK Beta

As you can see in the screencap above, there is a reference in the iPhone 3.2 SDK beta to a multitasking dialog box.

Now there may be other good explanations as to why those words are there, but I much prefer to think they are just a little further proof that Apple is going to extend the multitasking capabilities of the iPhone very soon – in OS 3.2 or certainly in 4.0.

Extended multitasking, slick app switching, and much better options for organizing apps are my top priorities for improvement to the iPhone OS.

What do you all think?  Will we see extended multitasking on the iPhone soon?

I would say it's coming sooner than we think. Take TomTom's latest update to their Navigator software for example.
The iTunes description includes the following line:

"- ADD LOCATIONS from other applications and websites on your iPhone to your TomTom app and instantly navigate to them or store them as favorites for future use."

Well, you can't use other apps to work with the TomTom app like this with the current OS. So have they let the cat out of the bag a little too early?

I'm surprised nobody has picked up on this elsewhere on the web!

      Hi Simon

Your thread is the only thing i can find on the net about the 'Add to my TomTom' feature. I've been trying to work out how to do this for days……

Received a sales email from TomTom today – again promoting this feature, spurring me into more searching..

Are you saying it can't work?

People always point to the jailbroken multi-tasking apps as if this is a simple thing that has already been done, but IMHO they couldn't be more wrong.

The two things I use my iPhone for most are Pandora and TomTom. The problem is that there's no real sharing of the sound hardware, so I have to turn off the sound in TomTom to get a smooth listening experience in Pandora.

There's all kinds of hardware sharing necessary for real multi-tasking — will the GPS info be shared? The audio hardware? I really hope so, and I hope they make it easy for developers to work this into existing apps.
