Quick Look: Premier League Sportacular for iPhone

Premier League Sportacular iPhone app

Premier League Sportacular is an iPhone app that helps you follow the English Premier League – with live match scores, fixtures, schedules, results, tables and news covering all the clubs in the EPL.

I’ve been trying out the app over the last few days and have found that although it does provide most of what it promises, it scores quite a few own goals along the way and is missing some basics.

One of the app’s big positive features is that it offers push notifications.  You can even set push alerts for each individual Premier League club – choosing whether you want to receive start of match reminders, match start, all goals, and so on. I haven’t tested these out, as I simply don’t need push alerts for this purpose.

In terms of own goals, I noticed very early on in using the app that it just gets things wrong quite often.  For instance, where did the second goal go in this match summary?

And what happened to the other two goals in this match?

The app also has places where it just misses out on some basics as well.  For instance, take a look at the League Table (standings) page:

It does not show total number of matches played for each team, so you can’t see who has games in hand without doing the math yourself.  It also doesn’t show goal difference, which can be the deciding factor in determining anything from which teams get relegated, which grab European places, or even who wins the league title.

When looking at the sections for individual clubs, it also feels like a lot has been left out.  There’s no information on each club’s home ground, nothing on their history (where they’ve finished in the past, what trophies they’ve won), and no player profiles or stats on leading goalscorers or anything similar.

Even the news items for individual clubs (which are just pulled from RSS feeds from other places) seem poorly implemented – with clumsy formatting and frequent slowness and errors on loading.

I’m a huge fan of the Premier League and would love to find a really good app to follow it with.  Sadly, Premier League Sportacular is not the one.  It feels sloppily executed and sparse on features and information offered within it.

You can find Premier League Sportacular in the App Store now, and it’s a free app.
