Good News – New Untethered Jailbreak Coming from Geohot

The jailbreak is all software based, and is as simple to use as blackra1n. It is completely untethered, works on all current tethered models(ipt2, 3gs, ipt3), and will probably work on iPad too.

Geohot – the boy wonder iPhone hacker behind blackra1n and the first ever iPhone unlock way back in the day – has released a video demo of a new untethered jailbreak that will work for all the latest models of iPhone and iPod Touch that have up to now required a ‘tethered’ jailbreak (one which requires you to re-do the jailbreak every time you have to reboot your device).

Oh, and check out that last bit: ‘will probably work on the iPad too‘ – now that would be sweet.

There is already some speculation that this new jailbreak might be based on the newest vulnerability discovered in Mobile Safari, the one announced at the recent Pwn2Own hacking / security event.  I hope that’s not the case, as I suspect a browser-based exploit will be one that gets fairly rapidly patched.

I can’t wait to try out this new jailbreak on my daughter’s latest gen Touch – she has been wanting that to be jailbroken for a while.

There’s no release date yet for this new jailbreak, but generally once Geohot starts talking about something, things happen quickly.
