Patent Authority is reporting that Apple is now the owner of the right to the “iPad” trademark in the U.S. after wrangling it from Fujitsu.
Apple now owns the iPad trademark. The trademark (Serial No. 76497338) was filed by Fujitsu in March of 2003 for their iPad wireless handheld computing device used by retailers. Records at the U.S. Patent and Trademark office show that the trademark was assigned to Apple on March 17.
Before the launch of the iPad in January, Apple began filling for the “iPad” trademark in other countries through their dummy corporation. This hinted at the name of the device it also left us wondering how Apple would gain the trademark here in the States, seeing as Fujitsu had filed the trademark for a similar market segment years prior.
Soon thereafter it turned up that Apple had requested multiple extensions to the required opposition periods for Fujitsu’s application and Apple ultimately filed for the patent with a different shell corporation.
